Back in 2000 when I was the first Plastic surgeon to start doing laser treatments in the Chicago area, the laser head needed 9 whole seconds of rest between hits. And it tended to overheat very frequently. Nowadays, our newest Laser hair removal machine cranks out an amazing 30 hits per second. This means that doing a whole back doesn't take us hours anymore. Sure it's still more successful on black hair, but you can effectively treat white, red or blonde hair much more than you could in the past. The #1 question we get is, is it permanent? Yes, it absolutely is permanent but you should not expect 100% of the hair gone. I myself have seen about 95% permanent reductions. It's important to be realistic. Our packages are for 7 treatments. Some people are happy with three treatments. Some people need more than seven. It depends how thick the hair is and what part of your body we're talking about. Finally, everybody asks about pain? The new lasers hurt far less than the old ones. First of all, the heads are chilled to decrease pain. We also have a Synercool that blows cold air to make it pain-free. Finally, we always recommend numbing cream for all office procedures. That said, some areas like the upper lip on a first treatment when the hair is thick and coarse probably is the most sensitive. We do a lot of laser services in our office 7 days a week, but guess what? Laser hair removal is still the #1 laser service patients get in the United States Dr. Sam Speron
