I love cedar. The look of it, how it clumps together, and especially how it smells. I was reminded of this while trimming my neighbour's hedge. Yes, the same one that kindly lent me her weed wacker. While I need a lot of practice / instruction on proper hedge trimming I did find it to be rather relaxing and I think that is down to the aroma released by the cut cedar. And while I am certainly not very knowledgeable about the Anishinaabe Teachings of the Four Sacred Medicines, on some level I understand why cedar is one of them. More introductory information on these sacred teachings is pasted below, from the Downie Wenjack Fund (link to site in comments): The information on this page is only a small portion of the many and extensive sacred Indigenous teachings and protocols that exist. Teachings vary from community to community and from one geographic region to another. For more information, please consult with a Traditional Elder, Healer or Medicine Person. Tobacco is the first plant that creation gave to the Anishinaabe. Three other plants, sage, cedar and sweetgrass, follow tobacco, and together they are referred to as the four sacred medicines. The four sacred medicines are used in everyday life and in ceremonies. All of them can be used to smudge with. It is said that tobacco sits in the eastern door, sweetgrass in the southern door, sage in the west and cedar in the north... Like sage and sweetgrass, cedar is used to purify the home. It also has many restorative medicinal uses. Cedar baths are healing, and cedar tea can be an excellent source of vitamin C. When cedar is put in the fire with tobacco, it crackles. When it does this, it is calling the attention of the spirits to the offering that is being made. Cedar is used in fasting and sweat lodge ceremonies as a form of protection: cedar branches cover the floor of the sweat lodge and a circle of cedar surrounds the faster’s lodge. #Cedar #Anishinaabe #Sacred #Medicines #Indigenous #TurtleIsland #Learning #HamOnt #RandomMusings

Adi Shankaracharya talks about the danger that lurks in the five senses, which threatens all human beings. By identifying totally with the body and indulging in experiences through all the five sensory pathways, a human is vulnerable and worse off compared to the animals as the latter are enslaved predominantly by only one sense organ. According to a Subhashita , an aphorism in Sanskrit; kuranga matanga patanga bhringa mina hatah pancabhireva pancha ekah pramadi sa katham na hanyate ya sevate panchabhih eva pancha Kuranga, the deer is attracted to the sound of the flute played by the hunter and walks into the trap. The elephant (Matanga) aroused by the sensuous body ( touch ) of the female falls into the pit and dies. The moth ( patanga ) on seeing (sight) the bright light flies towards it and perishes. The bees ( bringa) are drawn to the scent (smell) of the flowers and get trapped as the petals close around the insect. The fish ( meena ) is unable to resist the taste of meat attached to the bait and gets caught. The above is an example of what one sense organ can do. We humans have to contend with five of them. As a result we carry a greater risk than the animals and must never drop our guard. Indirectly, the above maxim tells us that fatal attraction is a result of excessive indulgence which will lead to your destruction. Ati sarvatra varjayet. This has been corroborated in the Bhagavadgita (2.67) and more than validates, what has been described above. Beltane marks the beginning of the Celtic Summer season… and it is my favourite time of the year! Everything now just feels so fresh and new. All around us, it’s as though the world is bursting forth with promise and possibility. It doesn’t matter how old I get, I’m just as excited each year to witness the new buds bursting forth on the trees in my garden. And nothing makes me happier than to see the wild animals living in the neighborhood congregate at my little backyard pond. This gratitude for the greening of our landscape and the immergence of new animal life is essentially what Beltane is all about – this Sabbat which arrives each year on May 1st. Our ancestors celebrated it because this is when they would have finally had solid evidence of the Earth’s fertility and therefore, it’s forthcoming abundance. For us, it is also a glorious reminder to keep our faith in the regenerative powers of the Light – both outside and inside of ourselves. Each year, I look forward to seeing how my garden is coming up, and it is always a little bit different… just like me. Sometimes the changes are subtle and then, in other years looking back, I realize I hardly recognize myself for the amount of personal growth and development that has transpired. The month of May can be such a healing tonic for our Souls. And the natural archetypal Healer within me very much connects with this current energy. I crave being outdoors again: breathing in the scent of the fresh dirt and flowering trees, and feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin. As the earth awakens with so much vitality, so do I. Do you see new promise or possibility within yourself at this time? What parts of you are needing to be healed? *** For my story about this plant and to get my Mixed Greens & Herbs Salad recipe, click the link to my Substack blog.
Beltane Blessings

It would be hard to better the introductory sentence of this article: "Exploded cans of rotting rabbit meat blanketing a scarred jetty is where the tale of the canned cottontail cuisine culminated for the port of Kingston in South Australia." How could you not read further about the canned rabbit business in South Australia? #geography #southaustralia #pests #rabbits #history #historicalgeography
How canned rabbit, once a dinnertime delicacy, was consigned to the burrows of history
