A hiatal hernia occurs when the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm and into the esophagus. This can happen due to obesity, chronic coughing, vomiting, constipation, chronic diaphragm tension, gas and bloating, or even seatbelt trauma. Symptoms include: heartburn, regurgitation, acid reflux, trouble swallowing, chest or abdominal pain, feeling full prematurely, localized pain around the hiatus, and shortness of breath. A hiatal hernia can be something that requires surgical intervention, but often it can be resolved non-invasively. At The Body Mechanic, treatment often includes abdominal fascial release, visceral manipulation, cold laser, breath work, core work, and dietary changes. There are things you can do at home as well to help manage a hiatal hernia. These include: aiming for smaller and more frequent meals, avoiding foods that trigger heartburn, maintaining a health body weight, elevating the head of the bed, avoiding lying down after a meal, and abstaining from smoking.
