Director of Business Relations at The Natural Nipple | Member Experience with Industrious | Leadership at By Nurture Labs
I’m deeply passionate about this issue: the fact that microplastics can cross the blood-brain barrier is alarming, as this barrier is meant to protect the brain from harmful substances. Once microplastics penetrate it, they may trigger neuroinflammation, disrupt neural communication, and impair brain function. Research has linked this exposure to neurological disorders and cognitive decline, raising serious public health concerns. Minimizing microplastic exposure is essential to protect brain health and reduce potential long-term risks. So what can we do? 1. Limit Plastic Use: Avoid single-use plastics like bottles, bags, and packaging. Opt for reusable containers made from glass, stainless steel, or silicone. 2. Filter Drinking Water: Use a high-quality water filter that can remove microplastics. Some filters are specifically designed to target very fine particles. 3. Choose Natural Fabrics: Synthetic clothing sheds microplastics during washing. Wearing clothes made from natural fibers like cotton, wool, or hemp can reduce this. 4. Avoid Personal Care Products with Microbeads: Check product labels and steer clear of exfoliants and cosmetics that contain microplastics, often labeled as polyethylene or polypropylene. 5. Proper Waste Disposal: Recycle and dispose of waste responsibly to reduce plastic pollution. Supporting policies and initiatives aimed at reducing plastic production and waste can also make a broader impact.

There are many reasons to be concerned about #plasticwaste around the world which unfortunately do not get the focus - or resources - they deserve. Next to that, more money is spent on lobbying for 'softer' policy, than on reducing the use of plastics, or the establishment of proper waste management systems to properly #dispose and #recycle. The negative effects on planetary and human health of plastic waste - and microplastics in extention - is an emerging field of study and it's pretty bleak. Today we're sharing professor Andrew Huberman's latest episode of Huberman Lab, he dives into the effects of microplastics on human health and shares tips on how to reduce their effect on your health. Valuable information in an age where we will most likely see more plastics than fish in the sea by 2050. Though we're grateful for the work by Professor Huberman and countless of his colleagues - we would like to emphasise: the only real possibility to reduce the effects of microplastics on human health is to ensure plastice waste doesn't end up in nature in the first place. The way to do this is through the establishment of proper waste management systems. #Transparent, digitally-enabled and #blockchain based; if you'd ask us. #endplasticwaste #circulareconomy
