In our digital age, managing screentime can be challenging, especially during the school holidays when regular routines are on pause. Here are our top tips on reducing screentime without compromising the joys of learning and exploration through technology: Communicate Talk to your kids about reducing their screen time and share your expectations. Make use of visual time limits for using devices. Be realistic The recommended screen time for children aged 2 to 12 is one hour per day and for teenagers it is two hours per day. Instead of suddenly dropping screen time to this ideal, ease your kids into these new boundaries, by gradually decreasing their screen time over time. Engage Spend intentional time every day talking to your kids and giving them your undivided attention. Plan games and activities you can all do together. Put phones and tablets away During no-screen time, pack away devices or put them on charge so that your kids aren’t distracted by their devices. Make sure all screens are off or packed away at least two hours before bedtime to prevent interrupted sleep. Create phone-free activities A great way to start is to make family mealtimes a zero-device zone. Remember, this means leading by example and packing your phone away too! Go outside. It is important to replace screen time with other activities, especially during school holidays when there is a lot of free time. Encourage outdoor adventures, like going on a nature walk or playing outside. Being outside increases endorphins, boosts moods and improves physical health. When families are away from home this holiday season, it's important to think ahead and make sure that their baby has a safe place to sleep. If a playpen is being used temporarily, parents and caregivers can take these steps for a safer sleep: • Place the playpen on the floor in the same room where parents / caregivers will sleep; • Keep the playpen away from potential hazards (windows, blind cords, patio doors, lamps, electrical cords, small objects); • Avoid soft items, like pillows and bedding, in or around the playpen; • Use a baby monitor and check on the baby often.
