Tracer bullet: Episode 1/3 Here’s a little glimpse into two very different project meetings: Team A (none is giving a damn and it is NOT okey): Client: "Are we going to hit the target during this iteration?" Dev Jr 1: "Yes, I think so." Dev Jr 2: "We'll even have some extra time for automation." Dev Sr : nods hesitantly PM: "Great, so we're on track to hit the target and boost our efficiency with some automation. Good job, team!" Team B (Realist) Client: "Are we going to hit the target during this iteration?" Dev Jr 1 : "No idea, to be honest." Dev Jr 2 : “i think we need more details" Dev Sr : "I think we might need to fire a 'tracer bullet' first, because we're kind of shooting in the dark here." PM: scribbling furiously "Right... so, it's a 'to be determined' with a side of 'tracer bullet'... got it." Sometimes, optimism is not enough to find your way — a 'tracer bullet' can light up the path! 🎯 While a 'tracer bullet' helps us illuminate the path in complex projects, how does it differ from a prototype ? what is the tracer bullet mechanism ? Questions in my mind, Why are we going for Iceberg if deltalake is already in place and doing well in 99% use cases. On a high level there is no much difference in features except Iceberg have ☝️Hidden partitioning ✌️ Partition evolution without re writing your whole data ( I have seen the pain of rewriting of data in case partition strategy changes over time ) Every open table format serves different purposes and you have to choose based on your needs, So no good and bad Why ? Because they emerged from the best data drivers 1. Hudi by Uber 2. Iceberg by Netflix 3. Delta Lake by Spark creators
