36th Mile – Tourist Hub or Haven for Persistent Offenders?
At the 36th mile of the Danube, you’ll find the port of #Tulcea. Once, this city was home to numerous factories and enterprises, including the well-known metallurgical plant, "Combinatul de Aluminiu Tulcea." But that was in the past.
What role does the 36th mile play in Danube navigation today?
Tulcea remains the gateway to Sulina (reminder, that Sulina is an island accessible only by boat from Tulcea). Every day, numerous boats run from Tulcea’s marine terminal towards the beginning of the Sulina Canal. These areas are well-known to tourists.
But what about cargo shipping?
There are single cases when vessels go to this port for unloading.
Today, the 36th mile has become an anchorage area for cargo vessels. Due to speed restrictions on the Danube, vessel that enters the port of Sulina in the morning often can't reach ports like #Reni, #Giurgiulesti, or #Braila by evening. Usually, it takes two full days, and the 36th mile becomes a resting place for such vessels. The same story applies when the fleet moves in the opposite direction or when the canal is closed due to bad weather. In these cases, the administration may arrange pilot for the vesse, from the port of Galati to the 36th mile. Once the canal reopens, the vessel can continue to open sea from the 36th mile.
Moreover, the 36th mile is where violators and those with technical issues are stopped. This is where inspections, PSC, penalties and document checks take place.
Personally, I’m always relieved when a vessel under our agency safely passes the 36th mile without receiving a call from the Harbour Master of Tulcea :)
With kind regards
