I just finished listening to The Unfair Advantage by Ash Ali and Hasan Kubba early team members at Just Eat Takeaway.com who played a big role in its rapid success. The book dives into a unique concept: your “unfair advantages,” those personal strengths that, if leveraged, can drive success in business and life. It’s packed with real examples, from the authors’ own journeys to inspiring founders like Melanie Perkins of Canva and Huda Kattan of Huda Beauty. Fans of How I Built This with Guy Raz will recognize a theme here. At the end of each episode, Guy asks founders how much of their success comes down to hard work vs. luck. Surprisingly, most give a lot of credit to luck. At first, I thought they were just being humble, but after hearing it so often, I started to think there’s something worth exploring here. The Unfair Advantage digs deep into this, showing that it’s about knowing what makes you unique and using it to your advantage. If you’re looking for a fresh, grounded approach to personal growth, I’d highly recommend this book. Ash and Hasan bring a lot of experience and insight to the table and it’s definitely worth following their work.

Have you ever tried something new and been completely surprised by how amazing it was? Well, that happened to me recently with... banana ketchup! 😳 It all started with a TV show. Maybe you’ve seen it? "Aldi: The Next Big Thing" It's this program where small businesses showcase their products, hoping to win a contract with Aldi. One episode featured a product that got my attention —banana ketchup. After watching the show, I really wanted to give it a go! So, off I sent my husband to Aldi (I hate food shopping!) 😂 And he actually managed to find some! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I mean, bananas and ketchup? It sounds gross, right?! But it was DELICIOUS! Really tangy! Strangely, banana ketchup got me thinking about your VA journey. Often, you stick to what you know because it's comfortable and safe. But what if you stepped out of your comfort zone and tried something new? Whether it’s a different approach to marketing, learning a new skill, or even changing up your daily routine……. those risks can lead to amazing discoveries and opportunities. Just like finding that banana ketchup, taking a chance on something new can bring unexpected rewards. 🤩 So, here’s my challenge to you: Try something new this week. It doesn’t have to be big, just a small step out of your usual routine. You might find an unexpected surprise, just like we did. It doesn’t have to even be business related! You love their hotdogs 🌭 , love their prices 💲 and you'll love them even more for what we're about to tell you! Costco! The big warehouse chain that we all know is under scrutiny for combating conservative think tanks who think DEI policies will lose them money. We applaud Costco's response so far and here's why. The founder of Costco, a descendent of Jewish immigrants, had a different kind of perspective of the customer. For him, the customer's trust was primary. And it still is. We applaud Costco for their pushback towards DEI antagonists and their advocacy to keep their DEI policies and not re-examine them for the smoke-screen of financial risk. Research shows that the financial benefits of DEI far outweigh the risks. But we want to go a step further and say that DEI is more about doing what is just and right and fair than it is about money. I wrote a long blogpost, which comprises of my notes from the Acquired podcast's deepdive into Costco. It's such a fascinating company! I've never visited a Costco before, even when I studied in the US: the most I'd been to was Sam's Club (which is Costco's competitor & imitator), which is quite a different kettle of fish. What really resonated with me about Costco was the focus on principles and values. Many organizations pay lip-service to values, and it seems that Costco is one of the few that actually pays heed to them. The other aspect that really resonated with me was the long-term, win-win-win-win (for them, their members, employees and suppliers) orientation of Costco. That is such a refreshing take, in a world of buzz, hype, and short-term profiteering. The word "dharma" can mean many things, including duty, teachings, responsibility. In the Buddhist context, it can also mean "principles", especially about reality, and also what is ethical. So, in the fuller meaning of "dharma", Costco is a living example of business-dharma.
