Did you know that the beer sector generates over €52 billion in value added in Europe? 🍻 The largest share comes from the hospitality sector, which generates approximately €22 billion in value added through on-trade beer sales. The retail sector also plays a significant role. While the value added in retail is lower than in hospitality due to the absence of services like serving staff, its contribution remains substantial. The beer production sector itself contributes over €14 billion in value added. Not to forget, supply sectors such as packaging, manufacturing, and agriculture contribute just over €10 billion to the total value added. A very good article by Adam Leyland from The Grocer on Carlsberg Group bid to buy Britvic plc and the potential coming together of a leading alcohol and soft-drinks company. The next few weeks will tell if Carlsberg is successful in it's quest to acquire Britvic, but it does open the question will the beverages industry now see other similar moves in this approach to M&A activity? Will other leading beer companies look to follow the lead set by Carlsberg? Would a leading spirits company look to acquire a softdrinks company with a strong mixer and tonic range? For any beverages company, strategic and long-term growth is all about winning "share of throat" through having a strong and varied portfolio of brands and products to meet consumer needs across different occasions and need states. M&A activity offers the potential to do this quicker than through organic growth. German Dr. Oetker Group has reported a 6.3% increase in sales to exceed €6.9 billion in its last financial year. Oetker witnessed growth across all business divisions during the year, with its food, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages segments accounting for the highest contribution to sales growth. The #food division, including Conditorei Coppenrath & Wiese KG, reported a 4.6% increase in sales to €4.1 billion. The beer and non-alcoholic #beverage segment - Radeberger Gruppe KG - achieved sales growth in line with expectations at 8.3% to exceed €2 billion. The 'other interests' division achieved a 9.8% increase in sales to €754 million, driven by the performance of #online supermarket flaschenpost SE and IT service provider OEDIV Oetker Daten- und Informationsverarbeitung KG. Dr. Oetker plans to increase its investment budget for the new fiscal year as it seeks to drive #innovation and the expansion of #digital expertise and sustainability initiatives. #fmcg #retail
