⚾ Mets Victory + Philly's Big Win! 🌳 As a Flushing native & lifelong Mets fan, I'm still buzzing from our incredible win over the Phillies! The rally towels were flying, Lindor was crushing it, and NYC was electric. But while the 7 Line Army is celebrating, let's take a moment to tip our caps to another win happening in Philadelphia—this time (thankfully), off the field. 🏙️ Philly's Clean and Green Initiative is turning vacant lots into vibrant spaces, proving that when a city invests in its neighborhoods, it gets way more than just good looks. From reducing crime to improving mental health, this initiative is a game-changer. So, while the Mets advance, Philly's public policy deserves its own round of applause. 👏 It's proof that transforming communities is a team effort, whether on the diamond or in our cities. Omaha, situated along the Missouri River near the Iowa border and stretching to the Elkhorn River, has a rich history dating back to humble beginnings. Here are some interesting facts about Omaha's early days! Informally established on July 4, 1854, at a picnic on Capital Hill (which is now the site of Omaha Central High School), Omaha later became the starting point for the transcontinental railroad, as decided by President Lincoln in 1862. This led to the formation of the Union Pacific Railroad. Although the territorial capital was Omaha, it was moved to Lancaster (later renamed Lincoln) after Nebraska became the 37th state in the union on March 1, 1867. Omaha's Union Stockyard Company was founded in 1883 and became a revival of Chicago's Union Stock Yards, dominating the nation's largest livestock market and meat packing industry until the 1990s. Dubbed "The Gateway to the West," Omaha hosted The World's Fair in 1898 and became a crucial transportation hub due to its central location. Today, it is the largest city in Nebraska and home to four Fortune 500 companies: Berkshire Hathaway, Mutual of Omaha, Kiewit Corporation, and Union Pacific Corporation. Warrior to Love: Show-Up I recently had an inspiring meeting with Councilman Michael Boylan from Jacksonville City Council District 6. It reminded me of the power of community engagement and the importance of taking action to drive change. Years ago, I considered a political career, but my wife and I decided it wasn't the right path for us. Instead, I focused on connecting with our local representatives, believing that true change starts with us. During our conversation, we discussed the book "A Quiet Revolution," which explores the history of Jacksonville's consolidation. Jacksonville Historical Society Both Councilman Boylan and I share a passion for history and a vision for progress in our city. We reflected on the challenges and the numerous failed attempts to unite and advance Jacksonville over the years. One of the biggest questions remains: how do you unite a community divided in the largest city by land mass in the USA? While I am still working on the answer, I know that getting involved and building relationships is a significant step forward. As a private citizen, I've had the privilege of connecting with some of the best professionals and actively participating in our community. My passion lies in solving problems and fostering resilience in relationships. Nothing happens unless you make it happen. It takes everyone to participate in creating and sustaining livable communities. Everything starts with you!
