Sepsis is the body's extreme response to an infection and is a life-threatening medical emergency. It ranks as the third leading cause of death in the United States. It can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death, especially if not recognized and treated promptly. Symptoms include fever, increased heart rate, increased breathing rate, and confusion. What can you do to help your heart? It’s a question we get a lot, and especially during American Heart Month in February.  American Heart Month is a time to pay special attention to understanding, preventing, and treating heart disease - which, unfortunately, is still the number one killer of Americans.  With that in mind, here’s a short list of heart-friendly activities you can try this month, and every month:  * Engaging in at least 5 30-minute sessions of moderate physical activity per week * Reducing or outright ceasing your intake of cigarettes, cigars, or vaporizers * Maintaining healthy blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels * Finding ways to reduce stress and relax, like meditation  We’d like to add one more: obtaining your CPR certification!  Everyone has a heart, and learning how to save one is never a waste of time.

Being Valentine's Day you might see the heart symbol a few times today. If you're lucky it might prompt you or a loved one to express feelings in words or a card or even a gift. But, in addition to the symbolism, we'd like you to literally think about your heart. February is Heart Awareness Month - and almost a third of deaths in NZ are attributed to cardiovascular disease.
