Scarcity of endocrinologists is super concerning and a big topic here at American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE) meeting. Can you believe there are only ~3700 endos for the 38 million people living with diabetes. We need to work together to increase the pipeline and attract the next generation of clinicians and help those in the field to have a sustainable business model and from burning out. If I had to do it again I would be an endocrinologist. Working with people with diabetes is so rewarding and needed. And to a one, every endocrinologist I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with during my brief career in diabetesland has been a wonderful, generous and caring human being. I won’t start a list of tags because it would be too long. But I know many are inspired (and some been mentored) by you Robert Gabbay MD, PhD
Critical to increase the number of endocrine fellowships available each year.
Sounds like there’s a big opportunity/need for innovations that can reduce endocrinologists’ workloads, too. Addressing the issue simultaneously from both the supply and demand sides seems to be a better approach than either alone.
Wow, only 3700 endo’s?! Thanks for sharing.

5moWalked past you but didn’t have a chance to say hello! I think this opens up the opportunity to discuss the role of APPs and our unique position in which we can help mitigate this in regards to patient care and outcomes. Endocrinology is such a rewarding field and I hope to see many medical students and others looking to go into it!
