Friends, The #stigma surrounding mental health is one of the many reasons why so many in our community struggle in silence. As therapist George Ishman notes, barriers like lack of access, financial concerns, and a historical mistrust of #healthcare professionals still keep many #Black individuals from seeking the help they deserve. This mistrust, rooted in injustices like the infamous Tuskegee Study, still casts a shadow today. Too often, we're taught to rely solely on strength or turn to religious #guidance, instead of considering therapy as a tool for healing. While #faith is foundational in many Black communities, it’s vital to understand that therapy is not in opposition to religion—it’s a powerful complement to it. As George wisely reminds us, "Faith without works is dead," and therapy is part of that work. We must break the stigma and seek support before it’s too late. Friends, This past weekend was nothing short of extraordinary, and I’m reminded again why weekends hold such a special place in my heart. Every encounter and person I meet leaves a lasting imprint, shaping me uniquely and profoundly. I cherish these moments, knowing I will be inspired and uplifted by the remarkable people I encounter.🌺 On Saturday, I had the honor of meeting phenomenal women making a real impact in the Richmond area at Beverly Claiborne's Amazing Faith Women's Summit. I was blessed to participate in the Real Women Real Conversations Authors Forum, led by Denell E. Parker, MBA Parker, author of The Complete Guide to Effective Youth Impact: Creating and Managing Programs that Work. Sharing my book series alongside three other inspiring authors was a privilege, and the event’s focus on mental health made it even more meaningful. I left with three new treasures for my library: Born in Crisis: A Memoir, In the Mourning, and Married to My Purpose. The energy and authenticity of the event were so powerful, that I had to share the link below so you can SEE for yourself! Sunday was equally soul-stirring. I attended the 20th-anniversary celebration of Freedom Life Church, where I witnessed God’s blessings unfold before my eyes. Later, I had the joy of attending the SPG Children's Home Gala 4 Ghana, where my husband proudly served as the Master of Ceremony. The pastor’s journey and her mission touched my soul, especially as I feel God guiding me on a similar path in Kenya. Her message of hope, faith, and obedience was a powerful reminder that God will add His super to our natural when we step out in faith. To top off an already amazing weekend, my children came home to visit. Every time I’m in their presence, I see God’s Goodness, Grace, and Mercy reflected so clearly. It’s the sweetest reminder of His love, and I’m endlessly grateful for these precious moments. 🌺Guided By Grace🌺 Week Two: Overcoming Trials and Embracing Growth  There were moments along the way that felt unbearably hard losses that shook me, obstacles that seemed insurmountable. But through it all, God was at work. He was polishing me, preparing me for what was to come. Every trial was a stepping stone, every tear a part of His plan to elevate me. Today, I stand on the other side, stronger and wiser, knowing that His grace carried me when I couldn’t carry myself. And I now see that some of the most important lessons came from the people around me. Whether from the vulnerable, the overlooked, or the undervalued, there’s wisdom in every soul, and I thank God for teaching me that. Tuesday: Being born on a Tuesday—a day known for its momentum—reminds me that even in the darkest times, God was pushing me forward, building strength and resilience. Each of those trials has served a purpose. Friends, Struggling with depression can feel like a never-ending journey. What works for one person may not work for another, and finding the right treatment can take time. But don’t give up—there are more options out there than you might realize. A new meta-analysis published in JAMA Psychiatry suggests that Bright Light Therapy (BLT), widely known for treating Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), can also be effective in treating other forms of depression, like Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). The study found that BLT could improve symptoms by 40% when used alongside traditional treatments. Why consider BLT? 💡 It's low-cost and widely accessible, with light boxes starting at around $45. 💡 It’s been shown to accelerate recovery, especially when traditional treatments aren’t enough. 💡 A simple step like adding light exposure to your day might be a game-changer! Depression can affect everyone differently, so keep exploring treatments until you find what works for you. Whether it's bright light therapy or another option, your well-being is worth the effort. Friends, On this #WorldMentalHealthDay, we honor those struggling silently and shine a spotlight on the pressing need to care for those who care for us. Today, we share the heartbreaking story of Dr. Will West, a young doctor whose struggle with mental health illuminates the immense pressures faced by many in the medical field. Will was a talented ophthalmology resident at George Washington University, known for his #resilience and #strength—qualities that earned him the nickname "Iron Will." Yet behind that resilience was a man grappling with the immense pressures of an 80-hour workweek, fears of career repercussions, and the belief that asking for help would be seen as weakness. This is why I speak about removing the mask so your network can be available to support you. Tragically, Will took his life at the age of 33. His story serves as a stark reminder: who cares for the healers? In his final letter, Will left a warning for others in residency. It’s a call for change—to break down the barriers preventing #healthcare workers from seeking the help they need, without fearing the loss of their careers. The story of Will and countless others underscores the urgent need to reform mental health care access and attitudes within medical institutions. This World Mental Health Day, let’s reflect on the courage it takes to ask for help and let’s work towards creating environments where that courage is celebrated, not penalized. We must do better—for Will, for those still struggling, and for a future where caring for mental health is seen as essential as any other aspect of well-being. 🌺Guided By Grace🌺 Week One: Reflecting on the Journey   As I approach my 65th birthday, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible journey God has led me through. Born on a Tuesday, a day often seen as the best day of the week for productivity and progress, I believe it’s no coincidence that my life has been filled with opportunities to work hard, grow, and move forward with purpose. Tuesday represents determination and focus, qualities I am proud to have inherited from my parents. Like them, much of my journey has been driven by a relentless pursuit of serving others, always striving to help people reach their full potential. It's been about taking those sometimes-unsteady steps forward, even when the path was unclear, and dismissing the doubts of those who questioned my ability. Through it all, I’ve learned to trust that God was leading me every step, guiding me with a greater purpose than I could ever imagine. For that, I am deeply grateful. I am grateful for the family that stood beside me—my husband, my children, and all the people God placed in my life to guide me along the way. I’ve learned so much, not just from life experiences but from others: foster children, students, people experiencing homelessness, and even children. Each challenge, each joy, and each lesson shaped me into who I am today. Most importantly, always be open to learning from others and their perspectives. Don’t judge the teacher—sometimes, the best lessons come from unexpected places. I’ve learned to stop seeking faults and instead apply favor, pointing out and building on people's strengths. That shift in mindset has been one of the greatest lessons in this journey.
