You can have the best camera and the best lenses in the world, but they're absolutely useless without proper lighting. So firstly what I'm going to do is turn on a backlight there, which obviously begins to bring the talent out of the gloom. This one provides a little bit more fill, so we're starting to get there. But now what we can do is turn on a lantern light and now we're starting to really see the talent pretty well in the scene. We can turn on the background light and what that does is it provides a nice consistent colour and intensity. Particularly good for skin tones. Really allow them to come out well and not make the background too distracting. Let's see what we can do. With a soft box over to my left here. That demonstrates what it's like when it's put on way too exposed. That is the opposite scenario now, where it's providing quite a contrasty kind of image, but what we can do is just dial it in. To a level where it's just starting to bring out the shadow around my kind of neck area and you can adjust that according to preference. One final point is the changing light conditions outside can be controlled using a blackout liner on the curtains.
