The 2024 PalmaVela regatta went down to the wire in the Maxi class with the two 100 footers Galateia and V separated only on countback after a close fought series. Both Galateia and V feature the innovative water ballast system from Diverse. Latest data from RED C Research confirms what we are seeing on track ... the 18-35 year old market is driving the upward trajectory of key metrics for the sport. On the eve of launching our latest strategic plan for the racing industry it is really encouraging to see the interest levels, attendances and profile of the sport continue to thrive, particularly among younger racegoers. We have seen this at recent festivals in Leopardstown Racecourse, Fairyhouse Racecourse and fully expect to see it in the week ahead at Punchestown Racecourse & Event Venue and Galway Races later this summer. Also really encouraging to see the positive experiences of younger racegoers is contributing to a stronger likelihood to advocate for the sport and get involved in racehorse ownership. -       45% of 18-34s attended a horse racing meeting in 2023 up from 40% -       46% of 18-34s interested in attending future racing meetings up 13% -       Almost half (47%) of sports fans interested in horse racing -       3 in 10 18–34-year-olds are strong advocates for horsing racing, up 5% Huge kudos to the Horse Racing Ireland team led by Aileen Goatley for the relentless focus on achieving these key metrics for the sport and to Amber O’Grady for the continued interest levels in horse ownership which is borne out by this research.

Just a quick statistics tutorial. At the horse races they have something called the “Pick 6” where you buy a ticket trying to pick the winning horse in 6 consecutive races. You may have heard that the odds of winning are “one in a million”. That’s literally true and knowing that helps me to keep straight the following. For any “event” that has a definite number of possible outcomes, to calculate the total number of possibilities for a series of those events you just have the number of possible outcomes per event “raised to the power” of the number of events to occur. So since you have 10 horses you have 10 possible outcomes. For 6 races you have 6 ‘events’. So the total number of possibilities is 10 to the 6th power(10^6), which is a million, meaning there are a million possible distinct tickets you could buy for the “pick 6”.
