Have you heard of National Frog Month? Well, National Frog Month is observed in April and is the month dedicated to these cute amphibians, the frogs. Unlike other animals, not all of us love frogs obviously with their look, appearance, and especially the croak-croak sound. Frogs are amphibian creatures found both on land and water. They are found to be predators and are playing a vital role in maintaining the environment throughout its lifetime. They have been valued as food by humans, and also have many cultural roles including literature, symbolism, and religion. But in recent years, frogs have been threatened with extinction for numerous reasons. There were approximately about 6,000 known species of frog found of which 4,800 recorded frog types were found worldwide except Antarctica. But in the past decade, approximately 170 species of frogs have become extinct. People and various organizations are using this awareness Month to focus on the universal decline in the population in locations across the world. We can also choose to celebrate them because they represent a symbol of transition, the leap from one thing, place, situation to another. Regardless of your reasons, keep in mind that these little creatures also on occasion need x-rays and when they do, Z&Z Medical has a vast array of positioning accessories and markers to assist you in your imaging needs. #Beelzebufo 🐸 can drive! It turns 16 today! Happy Birthday! Feb 26, 2008 Evans et al.’s paper naming the Devil Toad was published, and the world was introduced to an absolutely monstrous #amphibian. Residing in the Late #Cretaceous of #Madagascar approximately 70 million years ago, this extraordinary #amphibian tipped the scales at over 7 lbs and boasted an SVL (snout-to-vent length, a standard measurement for #frog bodies) of over 9”! In contrast, today’s largest Malagasy frog is a mere 4” and weighs only a few ounces. For a sense of its enormity, today’s largest frog, the Goliath frog, weighs 7 lbs, but its head is puny in comparison to Beelzebufo, which seems to be related to the #ceratophryines, the horned #frogs lovingly called Pac-Man frogs because of their astounding ability to open their mouth and swallow prey as large, and larger, than themselves. I love a 1932 Nature paper that noted one 6” #toad swallowed an #alligator 11” long! They x-rayed it and found it curled in two and commented the frog was sleeping peacefully. BTW, all toads are frogs but not all frogs are toads. Toads have dry, thick skin vs “normal” wet, thin skin of frogs. Both are #anurans, though. Beelzebufo’s bite was a force to be reckoned with, measuring a staggering 2,200 N, surpassing even a common snapping turtle, 23 times its weight, and a tiger, 46 times its weight! Humans can push merely 600 N. The upper jaw is lined with sharp teeth; a bite from it would have caused massive agony and lots of blood loss. Bonking it on the head to let go might not have had much effect. The species name, ampinga, means shield because the bone is so thick and covers the top of the skull like a shield. It likely had a giant tongue that sat folded up in the mouth and sprung out, whacking prey on the tongue’s underside. Check out the Fossil Crates blog to see links to videos of their tongues in action. We sell a research-grade, display-ready cast printed from highly detailed 3D scans of the original material. Fossil Crates is ESA eligible in many states, so order yours via your ClassWallet portal! #beelzebufo #deviltoad #devilfrog #Madagascar #paleontology #prehistoric #prehistoricanimals #prehistoricanimal https://lnkd.in/gUkRCYeX

SOUND PRODUCTION IN INSECTS Sounds are produced by insects in five different ways: (1) By rubbing one body part against another, i.e., stridulation (grasshoppers, bugs, beetles, moths, butterflies, ants, caterpillars, beetle larvae, others). (2) By striking some body part, such as the feet (band-winged grasshoppers), the tip of the abdomen (cockroaches), or the head (death-watch beetle) against the substrate. (3) By vibrating some body part, such as the wings, in air (mosquitoes, flies, wasps, bees, others). (4) By vibrating drum-like membranes called tymbals (Cicadas, leafhoppers, treehoppers, spittlebugs); and (5) By forcibly ejecting air or fluid (short-horned grasshoppers). #entomology #insects
