New CEO turn-around PR 101: Change the Narrative. The key to the positive impact of this piece is in how it focused on just one brand in the VF portfolio, Vans, as a representation of the larger issues; a bottom up approach that makes the challenges feel addressable, instead of trying to dissect the challenge from the top down, which could feel too big. #PR FTW. Also, this was a surprise: "VF’s net income in the most recent fiscal year declined more than 90% from a year earlier, partly because of the devaluation of its streetwear brand Supreme. Starting in 2016 VF Corporation, the company that owns iconic brands like Vans, a VF Company and The North Face, a VF Company, began to centralize decision making. Brands had to co-locate and follow the mandates of HQ units like "demand generation," "brand experience," and "retail excellence." The result: bureaucratic bloat and loss in vitality. VF provides a cautionary tale. If you're at HQ, the natural tendency will be to overstate your value added, and the temptation will be to move decisions closer. So next time you hear the siren song of "centers of excellence," or "consolidation," ask yourself: what are the costs in terms of foregone initiative, speed, and accountability? An ever better question: how do we capture collective value added -- creating linkages between different parts of the organization in a way that maximizes scale and scope advantages -- without erecting byzantine administrative structures at the center? For instance, how do you encourage best practices and learning to flow horizontally, not vertically? Happily for VF, new CEO Bracken Darrell is devolving decision rights back to the brands. You might recognize these two characters as the mascots of Frosted Flakes and Fruit Loops cereal. A lot of Crocs’ recent partners have come from entertainment and animation IP. Does this signal an emphasis on younger audiences? What works well or not so well? How do they decide who’s a good fit or not? At this point, Crocs collabs are so prevalent that marketers at places like Kellogg’s are likely aware of Crocs appetite for collaborations. The brand's electrifying energy will come from a lot of young folks. If reebok have consumers, black, white, brown, indigenous folks, working-class folks, that is actually the base that helps us to win because they are the ones that go "door to door." They’re the ones that mobilize other young people. Reebok cannot have that happen again. Thirty years. 🎈 Crazy, right? Maybe it doesn’t seem that wild to you—plenty of brands have existed for more than a few decades—but to us, this is special. Not sure if you’ve noticed, but it’s not easy for a media company to hang around these days. So far, we’ve done it. And to be honest, we’re damn proud of it, so we’re going to celebrate TF out of it this year. That celebration kicks off with this issue. We devoted the majority of our new issue to recognizing a group of players who helped SLAM become what it is today. It’s technically not 30 individual players, but rather 30 entries, with a few entries including people who needed to be acknowledged together (Q-Rich and D-Miles; the Ball Brothers; you get it). And then we compiled 30 young players we think have a chance to be on the next version of this list, because we always look forward while we celebrate the past. Speaking of that celebration, we’ve got a lot more coming this year. We don’t want to spoil anything, but let’s just say it includes IRL events, sneaker collabs, apparel collabs, digital content, an amazing new print product and more. In other words: the celebration will hit every single thing we do. We’re putting our full energy behind this anniversary, because in our world, 30 years is no joke.
