The regular Indian diet is not as good as you believe. Growing up I believed that food belonging to my culture was supposed to be the healthiest as it was home-cooked, and prepared by my mother. ❌ Most of the dishes lacked protein. ❌ It was high in carbohydrates. With over 100 million diabetics and 136 million pre-diabetics, it is not surprising to me when India is called "the diabetes capital of the world" by the Economic Times. What makes this even worse is that parents today do not have the time or the knowledge on nutrition to cook meals, and they pack ready-to-eat meals for their kids and eat something on the go when they leave for offices, compromising their nutrition. It is not a problem with the Indian cuisine. We make great use of the spices and have a wide variety of flavours. It is a problem of the daily practices legitimized in the name of culture and tradition that puts our health in a perilous state. Weight loss where you actually maintain your results is all about creating lifestyle changes you can do forever. If your weight loss strategy has you eating from a “special” foods list, cutting out food groups/ foods you enjoy, it’s not a lifestyle change unless you plan to make those changes forever. Instead of severe restriction, learn how to enjoy fun foods and prioritize nutritious food while being in a calorie deficit. The goal with sustainable weight loss is to eat as much as you can while being in a calorie deficit. As with any lifestyle change, it’s what you do most of the time that matters. Think big picture and ask yourself…do I want to cut out this food forever? If the answer is no, it’s probably not a great long-term solution.
