Historian, professor. Author of THE SPIRIT OF NEW YORK: DEFINING EVENTS IN THE EMPIRE STATE'S HISTORY; THE CRUCIBLE OF PUBLIC POLICY; and PROGRESSIVE NEW YORK: CHANGE AND REFORM IN THE EMPIRE STATE, 1900-1920 -- A READER
The Society of Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era published my essay on “New Light on the Progressive Era on their blog on June 26 https://lnkd.in/d7WqRzrR This draws on insights from my new book Progressive New York: Change and Reform in the Empire State, 1900-1920 It makes several points: *New York was a leader in progressive reform. *A network of reformers, mostly in New York City, reinforced each other’s work and several supported multiple reforms, e.g., woman suffrage, labor reform, regulation of business, direct primaries. *Women played a leading role in several reform initiatives. *The New York progressives often carried out extensive studies and issued reports before enacting reforms, *Progressive era regulatory agencies such as the Public Service Commission tended to be lenient regulators, working with businesses to improve services and iron out rate inequities rather than issuing struct orders and levying fines. *New York courts, unlike the Supreme Court as this time, generally backed reform.

President & CEO of CBIA, Connecticut’s largest business organization. Working with affiliates CONNSTEP and ReadyCT to build a thriving business climate for the benefit of all residents.
Truly remarkable work by this amazing team! More than 2000 bills introduced and this group had to dive into each one to understand implications on our businesses - the backbone of Connecticut’s economy via the careers they create, the state revenue they generate, and the opportunities that they provide our residents from their first job to being able to afford their first car, first apartment, first house, and so much more. Businesses that provide the 5th highest wages in the country, one of the most productive workforces, and the safest workplaces in the world. The employer-employee relationship is strong in Connecticut - no need for government to get in the middle. Instead focus on policies that address Connecticut’s challenges like making the state more affordable for residents and businesses, less onerous regulations, and more efficient government and processes. Don’t create policies that are looking for problems that don’t exist. Cheers to the CBIA policy team and the great companies and their employees that they fight for!
The 2024 legislative session has come to a close (my first at CBIA), and I am proud to have led this group of outstanding policy lobbyists advocating on the behalf of Connecticut's job creators. I was lucky to have inherited our team a couple of months before the session began, and the entire team truly exceeded all expectations. Covering every legislative committee on a multitude of issues on behalf of our member employers is no easy task, but it is certainly made easier by this group of dedicated and knowledgeable policy advocates. "In my view, Vance’s support for workers hinges almost entirely on white Christian nationalism. He does not want to uplift the US working class in all its vibrant, multiracial, multigender beauty; he wants (white, male, Christian) workers to earn better wages so that their (white, female, Christian) spouses can stay home and raise more (white, Christian) children. Vance, like so many morally bankrupt Republican politicians before him, leans heavily on cultural signifiers — Diet Mountain Dew, anyone? — and racist dog whistles about immigration and birth rates to signal his support for certain (read: white) workers, but shies away from supporting worker-friendly policies. Earlier this year, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida and Vance teamed up on a piece of legislation, the TEAM Act, that they said was meant to help workers gain a seat at the table. Instead, it was really just a veiled attempt to legalize company unions (also known as yellow unions, or non-union in-house employee organizations that are dominated by their employer). In short, to quote Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, 'He ain’t one of us.' The Republicans are trying to make fools of us by pandering to outdated and incorrect stereotypes about who union members are and what the working class is, hoping to turn us against one another by harping on perceived differences — the same way union-busters and grimy bosses have done since the beginning of wage labor in the US. But it won’t work. There are no neutral positions here — and we know which side they’re on."

For the second straight year, Michigan has lost Fortune 500 companies. These companies are highly sought after because they can employ thousands of people and have a positive reverberating effect on an entire region’s economy. The sad reality is that the Michigan Legislature and Governor Whitmer have enacted a series of anti-job, anti-worker policy measures that are hurting our state’s efforts to grow jobs and attract and keep economic development opportunities. We’re going to continue to advocate for common-sense public policies that help create jobs and safeguard Michigan families. https://lnkd.in/efRzRzi4
