Wonder what Plumbers do more specifically? Plumbers install, service, and maintain the waters needed in the State. They install the domestic drinking water systems vital for safe and clean drinking water. They install the piping systems that distribute waste and stormwater to proper treatment facilities to return it safely into the ground. Apprentices will acquire skills required to install, service and maintain many different types of piping – soldering, brazing, and welding to name a few. Knowledge of all the equipment and components the systems require to function correctly will also be acquired through training. All these are essential in protecting the nation’s health. 🏠🛠️🌟 The central theme of ElevatorInfo’s Home Safe for the Holidays safety awareness campaign is that the most important part of an elevator constructor’s work each day is making it home safe at the end of their shift. 👷♀️ “Having the safety awareness and the knowledge to do things the correct way (allows) me to go home safe to my family,” said Spencer Zeman, an elevator mechanic out of IUEC Local 133 we caught up with in Austin, Texas.   🚧⚠️ Spencer and another Local 133 mechanic, Patrick Shaw, talked with us about how looking out for each other helps ensure they’re always working safe. “It's nice knowing you have brothers and sisters who always have your back when it comes to performing a job or working safely,” said Patrick. 📚 The safety-focused foundational curriculum elevator constructor apprentices study at the National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP), along with weekly toolbox talks and quarterly safety training provided by companies like TK Elevator, and regular reviews of the safety alerts posted on the IUEC website keep safety awareness at the forefront of IUEC mechanics’ minds every day. I cannot stress enough how important it is to get to know your trade partners on your project. Not just your foreman, but the apprentices, helpers, and laborers. I had a conversation with one of the electrical apprentices yesterday. He didn’t quite seem his self. So, I asked them what was up. What’s got you down? Well, it turned out that his commute is beating him up. But what came out next put the biggest smile on my face. “I actually look forward to coming in everyday. You guys make work fun.” You heard that right, construction can be fun. You don’t have to beat people up to drive results. Firestop and Insulation! That’s apprentice work! I have heard that line or some variation of it probably 100 times in the last 20 plus years. I have even had apprentices told this by other carpenters, teachers and mentors. Many of them are encouraged to take the first opportunity they get to “learn something useful” Yet if I called the hall today the chances of finding someone who is experienced, knowledgeable and able to make good time of almost any of the products we install are slim to none. Funny thing is day in day out I walk job sites I see improperly installed firestop and insulation. Insulation that’s so poorly installed that it’s going keep a building warm like a t shirt in a blizzard or firestop that is installed with the wrong product’s or done completely wrong. I happen to see this improperly installed firestop system the other day. It left me with this question. Is saving a few dollars now using improperly trained, uncertified or inexperienced installers worth the cost of failed inspections, frozen pipes, call backs or worse loss of life or property? If it was “apprentice” work then everyone would be good at it. 2 years ago, I started writing our HVAC curriculum. It was an immediate hit, and we've been adding great content, new tracks, and a second instructor (guy on the right, Jarett) ever since. About 9 months ago, I started trying to solve the puzzle of a plumbing curriculum that would not only help our newest apprentices hit the ground running, but also help all plumbers throughout our system. And what a cool odyssey this has been! Please welcome our plumbing instructor (guy on the left, Andrew) who will solve this puzzle with me. What about the past nine months? It isn't called an odyssey because it is easy or straightforward. Mistakes were made. Nobody ever talks about those on LinkedIn. Find people who share your company's values. If someone does not, they are not for you. And when someone IS aligned, train them and coach them to be the best. The original Odyssey lasted for 10 years with many ups and downs. Monsters. Success is never a straight line.

👷⚠️ During the busy holiday season, it seems like distractions are everywhere. For elevator constructors who encounter hazards on the jobsite every day, it’s especially important to stay focused on working safe. 🏠🛠️🌟 As part of ElevatorInfo’s continuing Home Safe for the Holidays safety awareness campaign, we are highlighting some of the safety-focused content we’ve shared in recent months. 🛠️ When we visited with Safety Director Mike Langer and Assistant Safety Director Eric McClaskey in the Memorial Garden at the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) headquarters in Columbia, Maryland, they introduced us to #BESAFE, a strategy designed to help elevator constructors mitigate the OSHA Construction Focus Four hazards. Barricades – Are proper barricades in place? Elevator location – Have you identified/verified the elevator’s location prior to entering the hoistway? Struck by – Is overhead protection in place? Adjacent car – Is adjacent car protection in place? Fall protection – Are you using a Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS) where fall hazards exist? One of our sales staff recently received a call from an apprentice plumber who was on site trying to weld an electrofusion fitting. The apprentice didn’t understand how to turn on the welding machine, nor did he have rotary peeling equipment or pipe clamps.   He was working on a PE gas line.    The young apprentice was simply following his boss's direction but unfortunately this lack of awareness of electrofusion basics is common.    Page 14 of the Australian Plumbing and Drainage Standard AS/NZS 3500.1.2018 Water Services references AS/NZS 2033 Design and installation of polyolefin pipe systems. AS/NZS 2033 stipulates electrofusion is performed by certified people. In Australia this means PMBWELD302E. Note PIPA's POP001 Electrofusion Installation Guideline is referenced as the installation guideline.   Long story short, installers who do not follow the standards are likely to compromise their insurance and expose themselves to significant downstream risk should problems arise from poorly installed welds.

So when is 'enough is enough'? I've had problems right from the start with my plumber and maybe I should have cut him loose early on. But I gave him the benefit of the doubt and we got started. Here are the red flags that I should have spotted: - 2 weeks late starting - sent a brand new (and inexperienced) plumber and an apprentice to start 1st fix - didn't share the plans with his team so they were always questioning what to do - 4 weeks to complete 1st fix (sparks did it in 1 week) - constantly having to chase them as floor boards weren't put back and things weren't completed - needed to get a different team in to do ground works as they couldn't/didn't want do it - delayed pipework to increase water intake to the property - failed on inspection as they didn't follow the designs - not turning up when they said they would - currently late to start 2nd fix (sparks have completed this week) - and so many other minor things I think I'm done with him. But now I've got to find someone who will take over and at a price that's no more than what I have outstanding with the original guy, who can start next week. Wish me luck. PS. I hate confrontation 😫
