The Global Network of Deans of Education event at Innsbruck University this week provided brilliant opportunities for provocations, sharing, and conversations. My co-presenters William Gaudelli, carol hordatt gentles, Michael Schratz, and Mary-Louise Vanderlee and I were challenged by facilitator Prof Sarah Younie to address the topic: "Planning for the future - Solutions for Supporting Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4)". After our presentations we formed a panel and were asked four questions: 1. How do you define 'quality education' in the context of SDG 4? 2. What lessons from the past in teacher education could guide future developments in the field? 3. In your view, how can faculties of education effectively support SDG4 in practical ways? 4. As an experienced education expert, what is your vision for the future of teacher education? The responses were rich and exciting with a wealth of ideas generated. The Summer 2024 offering of Virginia Tech School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA)'s class "Future of Cities" kicks off today! Students start by encountering some possible VUCA-ness (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity) as they adapt to using the web platform Padlet as another tool for online learning and collaboration. Building from previous offerings of the class, students as part of Module 1 explore (along with other material) a 2013 TedTalk by futurist Brian David Johnson -- which poses the questions: What's the future you want? What's the future you want to avoid? What past do you want to be from? How do we collectively change the future (knowing that the future will include people who we don't necessarily agree with)? The Regional Universities Network were delighted to be part of Charles Sturt University's CSEdX 2024: Radical Reimagination: Rethinking Learning, Teaching and Student Engagement for Regional Universities. RUN's Chief Executive Alec Webb took part in the keynote panel session alongside Graham Brown, Paul Harpur OAM, Professor Sarah O' Shea and Maria Raciti. Mr. Webb argued that regional universities have a pivotal role to play in meeting the attainment targets set out by the Australian Universities Accord. He advocated for regional universities to proudly champion the work they currently do in educating traditionally underrepresented student cohorts and providing vital workforce to Australia's regions. #universities #CSEdX #regionalimpact #universitiesaccord #regionaluniversities

😳 ➡ ➡ ➡ 🤠 That first week I'd been to two colleges already & dropped out because I just could not find traction around a focus of study AND Because I was paying for all my college, I was quite invested in ensuring that the outcome of my education was targeted, focused, WORTHY of the time, energy, and treasure Was this a step backward? I completely erased all the accumulated credits when I applied to Oxford - their undergrad program does not accept previous university experience from anywhere else in the world Your entire University career depends on 8 comprehensive exams, taken at the end of your final year of study. No quizzes, no quarterly tests, nothing.... One week, one Thesis paper, & twenty-one hand written essays set the score for your entire University experience Hard, you bet; scary, ALOT I was in heaven. The experience taught me to read deeply, argue dispassionately, write with reasonable clarity (which is the same as thinking). Work with consistency, put the hay in the barn every day, treat school like a job, delay What You Want Now, for What You Want MOST I learned a great deal about paying attention, integrating a crazy volume of information into a focused picture, & making the complex a little bit more intelligible SO, to the freshers rolling in to the first term of 2024. Godspeed. You have an amazing opportunity in front of you that will be determined by how to spend each hour, of every day between now & exam week Spring 2028 What an amazing metaphor for life - Cowboy up:)
