Absolutely thrilled to share some exciting news! 🏆 Our team won the 2024 Innovate 48 Product Design hackathon, hosted by Design Buddies x Liftyz! 450 participants, 34 registered teams, 48 hours...our team's achievement is something I am exceptionally proud of as the team leader. In just 48 hours, we redesigned IKEA's sell-back program to enhance scalability and reduce labor intensity. 🏹The Challenge: The current IKEA sell-back program demands significant manpower and extended processing time, posing challenges for effective scalability. 🔑 The Solution: Designed an interactive and AI-facilitated application experience to increase efficiency - Automatic item recognition across multiple devices - Automatic condition review & categorization - Accessible sell-back application management across multiple devices 📍 The Results: - Optimized sell-back process through standardization and guidance. - Increased user traffic and feature adoption - Boosted second-hand furniture sales without hurting new furniture revenue - Promoted brand values (affordability & sustainability) This hackathon wasn't just about winning; it was a masterclass in UX design, storytelling, collaboration, and time management. These skills, honed under pressure, embody my commitment to excellence in product design. A massive shout-out to the incredible team members: Yan W., Guan N., Claire Yoon, Katherine Zhao, and Ding Li. Special thanks to our mentor, @Agnes Mak, judges Steven Streisguth and @Gaurang Alat for insightful feedback. Creating a great product requires you to think about design at many levels. It's not just about using the product, but the entire experience. Walt Disney had four levels of detail that he insisted the Imagineers considered when designing for theme parks. Level One: You’re in the country; you see over the trees some tall buildings, maybe a church steeple. You create intrigue. Level Two: You’ve walked into town. Now you’re on Main Street, and you feel like you're in old-town America. Level Three: You’re looking closely at the colours and texture of the buildings; it feels authentic. Level Four: You’ve gone up to the front door, and you’re grabbing the handle, feeling the texture and temperature of the material. All of these detail levels need to work together. At Disney they have to get to pay attention to all four levels to immerse guests in their story. This is where people fully buy in and believe in the magic. These four levels of detail are similar to a buyer's journey and the moment of first use. A user needs to become aware. They may have never come across you or your product before. How do you want them to feel? They become interested and learn more about who you are and what problems you might solve for them. How do you get them to try? Now they're trying the product for the first time, what moments of delight or surprise do they feel? Finally, they're using the product; what makes them stick around and use the product as you intended? The way Disney communicated these four levels to his Imagineers was helpful for them to think holistically about each ride, attraction and activity in the theme parks. It forced designers to zoom in and out and consider things from every angle. It also ensured that there was authenticity to every aspect of the experience. #design #product #experience #innovation
