Humanist | Connecting the dots between global challenges | Writer, Historian, Researcher | Advocating for a balanced, resilient future
Why do you need a good sustainability story? It can be a depressing fact that people don't remember facts (5%) while they do remember a good story line (63%). You can present people with all the information on climate change, biodiversity loss, inequality, etc. and you will stimulate little action. But give them a good story, a narrative or dramatization on how their lives will be impacted or their lifestyles are impacting the world, and suddenly people will act. A good example is the Post Office scandal in Britain. This has been brewing for almost two decades with investigative journalists reporting on it on a regular basis. The result was little action from politicians and the Post Office because it hadn't caught the public's consciousness. Last week, ITV broadcasted a dramatization of the scandal, now watched by at least 15m viewers. Now the establishment is falling over itself to be seen as doing something for the victims. A new law has been proposed to annul all convictions resulting from the scandal and for access to compensation to be speeded up. The former head of the Post Office has handed back the honour she was awarded after a petition calling for it to be removed reached 1m signatories. All in the space of a week. Ian Hislop and Andrew Marr discuss the point in the first two minutes of this video. I'm not saying a story will lead to action, and all stories must contain a credible fact. (The Power of One: One story, one main emotion, one main fact, one problem, one solution.) But just presenting the facts is unlikely to lead to change. We need the public on our side. Akin to the 'Elephant's tale of Porus,' where each blindfolded man perceives only a part of the whole elephant. Family members, influenced by their personal biases may grasp only parts of the future. A skilled advisor acts as a guide, facilitating the family's exploration of the big picture. By removing the blindfolds of bias, an advisor encourages each member to consider perspectives beyond their own." #familybusiness #governance #advisory Pic Credits: Vorlet

While considering the JVP's recent rally in Toronto and their leader's apology for their involvement in the tragic events of the 1988-89 uprising, it's essential to acknowledge the gravity of the situation. The loss of over 6,000 lives during that period is a deeply distressing chapter in Sri Lanka's history, and its repercussions are still felt today. The fact that the JVP has publicly apologized for their role in these events is a significant step, but it's crucial to go beyond mere words and ensure genuine accountability. Apologies must be accompanied by concrete actions aimed at acknowledging the harm caused and making amends to the affected communities. Additionally, it's important to contextualize the actions of the JVP within the broader socio-political landscape of the time. While their response to the oppressive behavior of the government is understandable, violence can never be justified as a means of political expression or resistance. As individuals, we must engage in critical thinking and assess the sincerity of the JVP's apologies and their current stance. Are they truly committed to nonviolence and genuine reconciliation, or are their actions driven by political expediency? These are questions that demand careful consideration and reflection. Ultimately, ethical leadership and governance require transparency, accountability, and a genuine commitment to the well-being of all citizens. While the JVP's apology is a step in the right direction, it's essential to hold them to account for their past actions while scrutinizing their current intentions and actions. This discussion should serve as an opportunity for open dialogue and reflection on the ethical implications of supporting political groups with contentious histories. By engaging in constructive conversations and demanding accountability from our leaders, we can strive towards a more just and equitable society for all.
