Had a great time at #autocon1 in Amsterdam last week. Great event and even better collaboration with the water-cooler conversations. Shout out to Chris Grundemann and Scott Robohn for putting the event together. Here are a few thoughts and takeaways from the event. Data is key. Without data, you're going nowhere on your network automation journey. Solving this means deploying a Network Source of Truth. It was telling how many sessions had a focus on data. A few different solutions were mentioned including Nautobot, NetBox, YAML + GitOps, PeeringDB, a newer solution called InfraHub, and plenty of custom databases. Build one, buy one, use one (OSS), but without one, the journey will be short. While data and Network Source of Truth are critical, they're actually only an enabler for network automation. You could argue it is only a feature of a modern automation solution/platform. If you have data without automation, there is a lack of value back to the business. If you have automation without data, see first point. Many sessions were focused on success stories. Hearing from other users is key, but there was a lack of Enterprise automation, e.g. F500. I'd say there was more focus on telco and 'mid-market' automation. How teams go about adoption is different (from culture, process, and tools) if it is a smaller localized team(s) vs. globally distributed. At the Network to Code booth, we spent time talking about how we help clients on their network automation journey. There were nonstop Nautobot demos for 2.5 days. These demos focused on how it is possible to codify and version network designs (make it easier to deploy and manage t-shirt size designs--a design could be a site, rack, device, etc.); how to manage network OS upgrades from Nautobot (this Nautobot App isn't open source yet, but if you want to see it, reach out); and Config Management (Backups, Compliance, and Remediation).
