🐄🐐🐴 **The Farmer and His Herd** 🐄🐐🐴 Once upon a time, a farmer had a herd of cows, goats, and donkeys. Every morning, he’d take them to his land, letting the cows and goats roam free while tying two legs of the donkeys together. The donkeys were frustrated by this and complained to the Blue Cross. So, the farmer has to untie them from next day . The next day, the cows and goats returned home safely, but the donkeys? They ran in all directions, some not even knowing how to get back! 🏃♂️💨 **Moral of the story**: Just like the farmer's herd, in any team, there are different types of people. Some don’t need much guidance and will finish their work on time (like the cows and goats). Others need a bit more structure and follow-up (like the donkeys). As a lead, it's important to adapt your approach—some need intervention to stay on track, or else they might wander off course. 😉 💡 Know your team. Let me welcome myself to Texas I landed in Texas yesterday and have already been out in the pasture checking on the animals. Every year we work cattle to get them branded, take some to the sale barn, treat the cows for any ailments, and look after them overall. It’s a neat experience leaving the office to come work cattle and it always brings me back to the roots of how I was raised and the feel of hard physical work. This is also the time when I get to be Uncle Brian. Getting to watch my nieces and nephews learn how to gain the trust of animals, experience the responsibilities of taking care of fences, and stacking hay is really neat. I know the pain the feel at the end of these days! These kids are incredibly talented and just brighten any day. As I’m taking this all in, I have been making a point to stop and reflect on how I can absorb these moments in a lasting way for my kid’s and my own growth. Starting with the trust of the animals. Mom and Dad bought some Shetland Ponies for the kids to get used to with less intimidation. When we first meet these horses, they don’t know us and tend to either run or cautiously step away as we approach. We slowly demonstrate to the horses that we are of no threat and only mean them well, and they slowly respond more openly. In fact they get to where they look for us to come to them. It doesn’t take long until these horses are fully interactive with the kids and trusting them to climb all over them. To get the full benefit of the horse, we have to first earn its trust. I feel like this is a characteristic that isn’t isolated to horses. Often times to get the full benefit of our teams we work with, neighbors, and friends - we must first earn their trust. My favorite part about this is that it isn’t new. It isn’t earth shattering, and it’s not even difficult. It’s something that I can do myself! While reflecting on this, I’m enjoying that something so simple and raw to my behavior is my focus today. Meet our ponies and donkey below. #leadership #followership #farming #family

As the collegiate football season wraps up, there's much to reflect upon from University of Washington's journey, including the pivotal game against Michigan. This season has been a profound teacher in the art of leadership, resilience, and growth.   ◼ Embracing Change and Challenges: This season was a vivid reminder that change is constant. UW faced numerous challenges, from roster changes to adapting strategies against formidable opponents like Michigan. Leaders, too, must be ready to embrace change, viewing each new challenge as a chance to innovate and improve.   ◼ The Power of Resilience: Throughout the season, UW showed remarkable resilience. Whether it was bouncing back from lackluster individual performances or pushing through tight games, their grit was evident. In leadership, this kind of resilience is vital. It's not about never falling; it's about how you rise each time you do.   ◼ Learning from Failure: Each game was a learning opportunity. Even the loss against Michigan, for instance, wasn't just a defeat; it was a lesson in identifying areas for improvement. Great leaders understand that failure is not the opposite of success; it's a part of it.   ◼Team Cohesion and Collaborative Success: This season highlighted the importance of teamwork. Success was never about individual players but about how they worked together. In leadership, fostering a collaborative environment where everyone feels valued and heard is crucial for collective success.   ◼ Staying Grounded in Values: Through ups and downs, UW remained true to their core values of sportsmanship, integrity, and dedication. Similarly, effective leadership is rooted in unwavering adherence to one's core values, regardless of the circumstances.   As we look back on UW's season, it's clear that the lessons extend far beyond the field. They are about leadership, perseverance, and the continuous journey of learning and growing. We did it!! 🥳 After 6 long years of suffering, we were finally able to remove the plastic ring that had been entrapped around the neck of a male grey seal known as 'Commuter'. The plastic ring, thought to be from a tin of anti-fouling paint, had created a significant wound around Commuters neck over the years it had been stuck there. Thankfully the wound was, although no doubt very painful, not as serious as we had first imagined, and we were able to remove the ring and release him immediately (the salt water works wonders on seal wounds). The reason why we hadn't been able to catch him for so long? To successfully and safely capture adult seals they need to be hauled out on land at a suitable location, and a suitable distance from the water, and at a suitable time in the tide cycle...we also need to be able to quickly mobilise a team of experienced seal handlers and specialist equipment...and get them there before the seal has returned to the water! For this reason, opportunities like this are extremely rare, particularly for adult seals... and then on top of that there is the risk that the rescue attempt won't be successful for a whole host of reasons...and that's what made Sunday such a special day 😊 A huge well done and thank you to everyone involved with this awesome rescue- including the hard work of volunteers from Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust who are, quite literally, the eyes and ears of the seal world- constantly vigilant to spotting seals in need and letting our team at British Divers Marine Life Rescue know so that we can leap into action! Another amazing example of the power of collaboration and team work, coming together to help an animal who so desperately needed our help. Traditional dog parks often pose significant risks to the well-being of service dogs, but this new play yard will mitigate those risks and support the longevity of these hardworking companions. 💛 *Gentle leader disclaimer: The loops around the puppies' noses are gentle leaders, which are training tools, not muzzles. These tools help raisers guide the puppies safely and effectively, much like a halter guides a horse. Gentle leaders allow full movement and do not restrict the puppies in any way, ensuring both comfort and control during training.
