Last week two holiday guests cancelled at the last minute.   Everything was ready after weeks of planning. We had booked accessible accommodation and hired the necessary disability equipment. A carer and a qualified nurse were scheduled to visit four times a day for two weeks. Additionally, we arranged suitable adapted activities on the island, and transport was organised.   And then, a day before departure, I received an email:   “I’m afraid my disability has gotten worse. I’m not fit to fly. Sorry, David.”   Yes, sometimes situations like these happen. But it’s part of the very nature of LanzAbility. As a holiday provider for people with disabilities, a person’s disability may sometimes make it impossible for them to get on a plane and travel to the island.   I could focus on the downsides. But I wouldn’t be Crazy David if I did that.   Instead, I practice what I preach and focus on finding a solution. In fact, we’re already rescheduling their holiday for the near future.   The team and I can’t wait to welcome you to Lanzarote for a holiday of a lifetime. And you know what people say, right? I like that the Public Service has expanded the definition of accommodations to cross all equity grounds and is the removal of barriers for any equity group! You are echoing what I have define as the 'a' grade approach! We need to move organizations from having the 'd' approach: The initial response is to DENY harm could be caused as harm was not intended. As it is realized harm occurred - the response shifts to DEFENDING actions as following policies and procedures. The final and most harmful part of the response is DELAY, where people are kept in a state of harm while stating someone else has responsibility. You are describing the 'A' grade approach" ACCEPT that a person who states they have encountered a barrier have encountered one, and that even if you did not intend to create a harm it is still possible you did. ACTIVELY listen so you understand fro their perspective - whether you followed policy or not, if harm was done harm was done. ACT now and not later. If it is in your power make adjustments, if not find someone who can. It is part of the core public service to value people and that means to remove barriers now, not to state it will be changed later.
