How well do you know Used Dumps? Part 4 with tridrives? Got to love the sleeper on a dump truck.
All 8X6 has 6S/6M ABS, so where are the sensors located? 2 on the steer, how about the drives? I don't know about all OE's, but the ones I am familiar with, locate them on the center and rear rear rear axles. This can be verified by observing the sensor wire on the outer ends. No wire, no sensor. The rear rear rear is the lightest axle of the three and is sensed for best braking.
This leaves the fwd drive exposed to the spin out/lack of lube failure, noted previously with the 4S/4M on a tandem w/ATC. If the driver doesn't rely on ATC and stops to lock all the axles when conditions mandate, then this won't be an issue, however when loaded, good luck when turning.
The fwd drive does 1/2 the work on any axle manufacture that is not planetary. Power split is 50/25/25. This is why the axle manufactures do not increase the GCW between a tandem and tridem axle. The tridrive helps with traction, vs. a lift axle.
Power enters the power divider on the fwd drive, where it's divided, sending power to the next axle. The center axle divides the same. This is why the fwd drive is subject to axle shaft failure and chances are good it's the tire eater of the three. The rear rear rear also eats tires given tire scrub due to it's light weight.
If the published GCW is increased tridrive vs. tandem, then chances are good it's 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 split as with planetary axles.
I do not recommend tridrive ATC, however on a tractor you have no choice, given FMVSS 136. This recommendation is only for trucks unless the driver takes steps to protect the axles.
Let's say the axles are NOT locked and no ATC, given the rear rear rear RH side is the lightest outer end, so it's chances of spinning increased assuming like traction. Speed doubles though every set of spider gears. That means this outer end goes through 3. 10 MPH, X 2 X 2 X 2. How fast is it turning and yes another lack of lube condition.
Orders are starting to slow, so could be a perfect opportunity to pickup zFactor education to reduce specing errors. Spending $'s after the chassis is on the ground always cost more than doing it correctly the first time.
We have held generic classes in the past, and would be willing to do so again, if there is enough interest for those who want to be the best. It would be generic, so any person could attend. Send an email if you’d like for us to help grow your knowledge. Ghey@zfactorconnect.com Whomever sends the largest group, will dictate where the class would be held. You won’t find this offer anywhere else. We have the Grit to make a difference.
We are the Sherlock Homes of Specing. Besides eLearning, Calculators, White Papers, etc, we'll train at your facility. The 3 of us for eLearning have 100+ years of experience. Take advantage of what we know.
