𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗢𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗪𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘃𝘆 𝗩𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀? It’s a bit like visiting the dentist: nobody really wants to do it, but it’s best not to leave it too long. 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 In some industries, especially those that transport hazardous goods, frequent verification is considered essential. Employers may opt for weekly, monthly or quarterly checks to ensure everything stays up-to-date. In contrast, others may choose to verify licences annually, typically during employment contract reviews or renewal times. The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) itself does not mandate a specific frequency for all cases, but it emphasises the importance of having processes in place that are "reasonably practicable" for maintaining safety. 𝗔 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱 A recent court case (https://lnkd.in/dp4yBQCW) in New South Wales highlighted the importance of regular licence verification. In this case, De Paoli Transport Pty Ltd amended their safety system to require driver licences verification each 6 months as part of remedy for the failures. So, could six months become the new standard? 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 Verifying licences every month may seem like overkill for some, while for others, especially companies with a history of compliance issues, it could be seen as a smart preventative measure. The key is to find a verification schedule that aligns with the company’s risk profile, operational needs, and regulatory expectations. For example, a transport company that regularly hires casual or temporary drivers might benefit from more frequent checks than one with a trusty team of long-term staff. 𝗜𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮 “𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲” 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆? There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. Each driver has a different risk profile, which, when combined with the company’s overall risk level, can mean different needs for different operations. Newer or younger drivers (a bit of ageism here, sorry) who still think they’re invincible — may need more frequent checks, while the veterans might not require as many. Some companies choose to incorporate licence checks into broader safety and compliance audits, which are typically carried out biannually or annually. Managing a ‘grey fleet’ comes with its own set of challenges and considerations – but one thing that remains constant is your legal #compliance and #dutyofcare responsibilities. Even if an employee is driving a personal vehicle for work, you still need to show the same level of commitment to managing road risk and protecting the drivers’ #healthandsafety as you would for leased, company-owned or hired vehicles. Hey Trucking Industry Professionals! I often get calls from newly licensed drivers looking for jobs. Often times the door is shut on them before they get the opportunity -usually due to insurance requirements, etc. Instead of ending communication with them, I like to assist however I can.
