Update: It's the last day of the competitive clothing drive. At the end of last week, our team (the Spoons) was falling behind and had dropped to the second spot. We gave each other a rallying pep talk, shared some words of encouragement and WOW check out that Monday/Tuesday pile of clothes around the Spoons table (far right, light blue). I love the teamwork mentality we have at Blue Compass. We all pitch in and work together toward our shared vision (which in this case is most definitely winning). In fact, this whole clothing drive is possible because of our team mentality. Any given year we have 8-12 crews that people can sign up for if they are interested in helping plan and organize events, holidays, etc. It gives everyone the chance to dedicate a little extra time to their favorite things, and build camaraderie with their peers who share common interests. The clothing drive was put on by our fabulous "Moral Compass" crew, formerly known as the volunteer crew. Would you be surprised if I told you that they have three creatives on their team?

Purpose is thrown around quite a bit in marketing, but for The Raw Carrot and its team, it is a real, tangible concept, captured in a bag of soup. Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting The Raw Carrot's headquarters in person with the fantastic team from OneChurch.to. By selling their delicious soup, they provide dignity, community and support to those living with disabilities through purpose-filled employment. During our time with their founder, Rebecca Sherbino and their leadership team, a few things struck me: 🥕 Their team's ingenuity. Recognizing a need and creating a scalable model which they are working to replicate across the country. 🥕 Their truly entrepreneurial innovation. Stewarding their limited resources to develop new lines of income for seasons when the soup isn't in high demand (I'd say they are pros at effectuation in action). 🥕 Their care and attention to the unique needs of their staff. Be it coaching, one-on-one support, or even as simple as creating an atmosphere of calm in their kitchen. I'm genuinely inspired by what Rebecca and her team have accomplished, and I am so excited to see The Raw Carrot grow and bring purposeful employment to more people who are experiencing boundaries to employment. Can a manager take tips on days they're assigned as a server? ✅ Answer #2: It depends. We recommend first identifying the business's needs. Is a manager needed, or is it a shift lead? A manager has hiring, firing, and scheduling tasks and/or influence, while a shift lead typically manages tasks, not people. I didn't follow any hiring "advice" when I opened Protein Bar. I put a Craigslist ad out on an Easter Sunday at 11pm.... And woke up the next morning to 200 resumes! I hired 14 awesome people. -> Acting students -> Dancing students -> Creative students Many said I was crazy not to hire folks with foodservice experience. But I wanted folks that were performative. After all, we were putting on a show for our guests. There was a lot of theatre in what we were doing behind the counter. I wanted our team to radiate that. So no better place than students who are learning how to do just that being on stage. My strategy worked. First team members told stories every day of how we at Protein Bar were “changing the way people eat in the go.” This hiring philosophy continued for my entire tenure at Protein Bar. And even to this day, I interview for creativity and performance experience.
