Now more than ever, it is imperative that we commit to authentic anti-racist work within our educational institutions. Authentic anti-racist work goes beyond performative gestures or one-off initiatives. It demands a deep, sustained commitment to: 1. Inclusive, Radical & Liberating Curricula: Ensuring that our courses reflect diverse perspectives and histories, particularly those that have been marginalized. With a pedagogy that goes against the grain of the normal and privilege induced power dynamic of the classroom. 2. Equitable Policies: Implementing policies that address systemic inequalities, from admissions processes to faculty hiring and promotion. 3. Active Allyship: Fostering an environment where all members of the academic community are encouraged and supported to challenge racism and advocate for inclusivity. We have a mission to build a humane school system led by ethical leaders dedicated to integrity, social justice, and equality. Yet, tackling issues of race within this mission constantly challenges us. Recent reports from Heads and senior leaders highlight a disturbing rise in racial incidents among students. This isn't a problem that can be solved with knee-jerk reactions - no matter how tempting it is. Instead, it demands proactive, committed efforts, especially from the UK's predominantly white school leaders, to address and eradicate racism's root causes. This work is not easy, but it is necessary. What we do now will shape tomorrow's leaders. "I need a guide book on non-inclusive language" That's often what school leaders and teachers request. They want to fix things and get things right, and know what we can and can't say. But it's not really THE starting point. Language is always evolving. What's more important is intentionally being curious. EDI is a journey of introspection and creating a legacy of change. To ensure that we see the humanity in ourselves and others. And agree that we all have the right to exist. Un-layering systemic discrimination, biases and internal narratives takes time. And for us to do that effectively we need to start with leadership ourselves and of our organisations. In many states, the state of education for our Black and Brown children remains a pressing problem, and let's be clear 👉🏾 it's NOT the fault of the children. I've walked into countless classrooms and what I've witnessed is not what the media often portrays. I haven't seen rampant misbehavior or chaos. Instead, I see children behaving just like any other kids their age - curious, eager to learn, and full of potential. So what's really holding them back? Here's what I've seen: 1️⃣ A pervasive lack of belief in the worth and capabilities of Black and Brown children. 2️⃣ Unsupportive and disorganized leadership within our educational institutions. And who bears the brunt of this failure? The children. They're unfairly blamed for circumstances beyond their control.
