Let's talk about Holistic Care...  What is it?  Simply put, it’s about an all-encompassing approach to patient care that combines physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual care. It’s very common that a person is more than their illness, so it’s about healing the whole person.  Why are people cautious about it? Many argue that it may divert from evidence-based medicine. However, many have contradicted the apprehension by saying that it enhances conventional treatments, offering a more rounded healing process.  Why we should be thinking more about it?  It’s no secret that the world we live in is fast-paced. Which means that holistic care is essential. It supports the idea that healing comes not just from medication, but from a supportive, empathetic care environment (your role as a nurse is to be empathetic, so you’re already practising certain elements of it). This helps to empower patients, recognising their individual healing journeys.  It seems to be quite the debate. Where do you stand on it? Lately, I had two encounters which made me realize how casually one takes their health. Interestingly, individuals involved in both incidents were well-educated and held esteemed positions. In first case, the person had a constant tooth ache, mild bleeding and difficulty in chewing since 6 months. In other one , the person had breathlessness, sweating episodes, pain in the chest and tingling sensations for nearly a month. When I suggested both of them to visit the doctor, the answer was the same " arre kuch nahi hai, ek painkiller se theek ho jayega."(Translation -Oh, it's nothing, a painkiller will fix it.) This made me reflect on the prevalent attitude towards health. As dentists we are often told, people care the least about their teeth, it is not as important as any other organ, but in most cases, people care the least about anything and everything unless it escalates. So in reality the negligence is not towards one specialty or "organ of the body", it is just about the mindset "jab tak chal sakta hai chalao".(Translation- if it's bearable, it's manageable.) Fortunately, I managed to persuade them to seek medical help, and both were diagnosed with issues that required treatment. Perhaps the solution lies in raising awareness and discussing health issues on platforms accessible to all, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing health above all else. #healthcare #doctor #dentist #awareness #nonclinical #health

Doctors generally focus on curing illness once it starts. It’s what they’re trained to do. But I find that stifling. It led me to ask myself, “What if I could help patients prevent some of the issues that land them on my operating table?” Allopathic medicine excels in addressing illnesses, but I believe we can do more for our overall wellness than wait to address problems as they arise. Instead, we can tailor our lives to proactively enhance our well-being through functional medicine. Functional medicine allows me to dive deeper with patients, offering comprehensive wellness packages that go beyond the norm. In my non-surgical practices, I work with patients over long, detailed visits, enabling me to understand their lifestyles, diets, and current conditions. Then, we create a wellness plan that tackles their specific needs. As a surgeon, my passion has always been fixing issues. #12 - One of the best favors I can do for a family (and myself) is to reach out early if I see the case has potential to go poorly. The better my rapport with the family, the better buy-in I will have, which is important when I’m delivering bad news. When a patient isn’t improving as expected, and I see that difficult decisions may lie ahead, I follow this pattern: Conversation #1: 🔵 I introduce myself to the patient and/or family and ensure they understand the medical situation. I explain the unknowns. (e.g.: “Right now, we don’t know if Sally’s breathing will improve.”) [Keep it open ended] 🔵 I explain what we are doing in the meantime: “We will continue to give best supportive care including breathing treatments, etc...” 🔵 Then I leave them with a thought: “Of course, I want Sally to live long and recover, but we should also be prepared for the worst-case scenario so that we can give direction to the medical team. One question to think about is: would Sally ever want to be intubated?” Now, the patient/family are ✅ 1) grounded with the potential of things going poorly, and ✅ 2) aware of the most pressing question to answer. 🔵 Finally, ask them to talk again in the coming days. Conversation #2 simply carries these topics forward. Even if the worst case has moved from possible to inevitable, I often find that the discussion progresses smoothly without shocking or blindsiding the family. _______________________________________________________________________________ As a healthcare provider for the chronically ill and terminal, I give bad news every day and I have learned how to do it well—plus mistakes to avoid. Bringing up sensitive medical conditions like obesity and drug & alcohol dependence with patients can be daunting, but it's a crucial step toward their well-being. As a GP, I've found that initiating these conversations in a supportive and non-judgmental manner is critical. I aim to empower my patients to take charge of their health through motivational interactive discussions. By fostering open dialogue and active listening, I guide them toward developing comprehensive plans involving multiple disciplines of medicine. Insight from the patient is paramount in crafting these plans, as it ensures they feel heard and involved in their care journey. Regular follow-ups and ongoing motivation and support further reinforce their commitment to change. Building trust with patients takes time, but it becomes the cornerstone of their care once earned. Together, we work towards cultivating healthier habits and achieving sustainable lifestyle changes.
