🌱 Happy National Garden Day! 🌼 Yes I am a senior data and AI scientist but I am also a huge organic gardener. One way to remain sane when working with complex data is to garden :) 💐 As we celebrate the joys of gardening, here’s how you can kickstart your gardening journey with 5 easy tips and the right tools to make it a breeze: 🌷 Know Your Zone - Use the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map online to find out which plants will thrive in your area. Here is a useful zone indicator for the US https://lnkd.in/e9BvQUeH . A good gardening app like PlantIn or a simple google search can help you identify the best plants for your local climate. 🌹 Start with Easy Plants - Choose plants like basil, mint, lettuce, tomatoes, sunflowers, and marigolds that are forgiving and easy to care for. Equip yourself with a beginner’s gardening kit that includes basic tools such as a spade, rake, and gloves. I used to tell my kids…this is why we have the dollar store because you can get the tools for a dollar… lol. You seriously cannot kill cherry tomatoes so that is a great one to start with…who does not love cherry tomatoes? 🌻 Plan Your Space - Sketch your garden layout on paper or use a garden planner app like Garden Planner to visualize where each plant will go, considering the amount of sunlight each area receives. Sun is a big deal so make sure your plants get enough sun if they are sun loving plants…cherry tomatoes needs sun :) Note normally here in the US it is the south side of the house that gets the most sun. 🪻Invest in Good Soil - Purchase high-quality potting mix or enrich your soil with compost. A soil testing kit from Amazon or Home Depot can be very useful to assess the nutrient and pH levels of your soil, helping you to optimize plant health. I have homemade raised beds made of cedar and I buy a huge bag of miracle grow garden bed compost to throw in each bed every year. If you have a local farm then adding some dried manure goes a long way…just make sure it’s aged at least a year or you will burn up your plants. 🪴 Regular Care - Maintain your garden’s health with routine watering, weeding, and pest checks. Tools like a watering can or hose with adjustable nozzle, weed puller, and organic pest control sprays are essential. I never use traditional chemicals on anything! I don’t have fancy tools but I do use gloves I bought from Costco. Soapy water makes a great organic pest spray also…just a tiny bit of liquid Castile soap and water in a spray bottle. (Almost nothing eats cherry tomatoes 🍅) 🌺 Let’s get our hands dirty and transform our environments this National Garden Day! Share your garden beginnings and progress. This is my favorite pastime that provides exercise, sunlight, relaxation, and clears my mind. Plus I have gorgeous plants all spring and summer along with free groceries. Let’s grow together! 🌿💚 #NationalGardenDay #GardeningTips #SustainableLiving #HomeGardening #Ilovegardening #organicgardening #preppers #healthylife
