I did a keynote speech last year, sharing my lived experience with a room full of social workers, when it came to light that many social workers get minimal, if any at all, training around coercive control and domestic abuse. I only have until 3rd July to get at least 10,000 signatures on my petition. So, if you can please sign the petition, share it with your friends, family and colleagues to get them to sign it too. We need all our professionals to get adequate training so they can do their job and put survivors of domestic abuse at the heart of what they do. #SocialWorkers https://lnkd.in/guDAyhQf

Did you know that 83% of survivors of domestic violence have had their ability to work disrupted by an abusive partner? Many are forced to choose between safety and their jobs. Survivors miss more than 6.7 million days of work each year, and 1 in 6 report losing their job when they needed time off to address the violence. No one should have to make the impossible choice between safety and financial security. We’re fighting for paid safe time so survivors of violence can take the time they need to heal, seek support, and protect their families without risking their paycheck or job. We are proud partners of a safe leave working group made up of state, national, and tribal experts and advocates from across policy spaces. Last month, we released our first resource: “The Need for Paid Safe Leave & Model Legislative Language.” This important document offers tools and model policy language for policymakers and advocates to ensure survivors can take paid, protected leave from work, without jeopardizing their economic security. Media over the last 48 hours and especially today's AMBER ALERT is a reminder to everyone to share the details and importance of paid family & domestic violence leave. Whether you experiencing this yourself, you are a neighbour, friend, sibling, grandparent, family member, a business owner or anyone in a HR position, let's share the message that all employee's are all entitled to 10 days paid family & domestic violence leave per year. Whilst 10 paid days may not be the sufficient amount of time needed to relocate and settle yourself and your children elsewhere, it may be what you need urgently to start planning, accessing legal or police support, getting your ducks in a row, important documentation, alternative or temporary accommodation and professional appointments to take a step forward. Do you have someone to call or reach out to and have a safe conversation or code of some type at any time of day or night? All too often the other person may have control or access to your phone or media accounts, perhaps there are codewords or emojis that you add to a message that make it known that you need help? This is definitely not a simple answer to a very complex and fearful situation. We encourage employers to share the family and domestic voilence leave video and ask you to consider what you can do to start these imperative conversations in the workplace. Are you able to work collaboratively on a process and start to roll out 'what to do' for your employees, family members or friends to help. What can we do better to help? https://lnkd.in/geEhAjHr

In a new BBC report, Tania and Maria tell their stories of being modern slavery survivors. Their experiences are a stark reminder of the atrocities many endure to this day, subjected to brutal conditions and violence, earning just 30p a day and living in inhumane conditions for many years. Potential signs of modern slavery include: - Appearing to be under the control of someone else and reluctant to interact with others - Few personal belongings, wearing the same clothes every day or wearing unsuitable clothing - Restricted movement and lack of personal identification documents - Reluctant to talk to strangers or officials, including police or health workers - Frightened or withdrawn with signs of physical or psychological abuse - Reliant on external transport to get to and from work, often at unusual hours If you have any concerns that someone may be being exploited, please call Unseen UK's helpline on 08000 121 700 for guidance. Through research we are finding that domestic abuse training is outdated & like a postcode lottery for social workers across the country. We need to change that to empower and equip social workers with updated and mandatory training to support survivors. https://lnkd.in/guDAyhQf #coercivecontrol #domesticabuse #socialworkers #mandatory #training

Raise Brave Girls condemns all the acts of violence in the country. Many of us have been taken aback the level of violence faced by the taxi driver who has been attacked in his own taxi by a thief. To note that the thief/aggressor was arrested by fellow civilians. Yesterday we saw another thief in a market who was beaten up by two ladies. This is a strong signal that our society is getting sick. Alongside implementation of law and order we have to put emphasis on rehabilitation and get to the root cause of the problem. Why are some people stealing without fear? We have law and an effective judiciary for sentence. RBG proposed for implentation of emergency poles across the country to counteract violence in public places, safety camera in all market place and more police patrol on bicycles or rollers. Social workers have to make a follow up after accused sentence in terms of having access to identification documents, work placement and counselling. Raise Brave Girls strongly believe that the solution alongside sentence is counselling and rehabilitation or else we will not get out of this vicious circle.

Are you familiar with work mobbing? Nowadays, it seems to be a growing trend, and a lot of employers are using this now to get rid of who they decide are unfavorable employees. In other words, if you go against the grain in anyway, then you become a victim of your own circumstance. They use their, so called, obedient employees, against you and they will make you so uncomfortable within the workplace that you will inevitably quit or do something outside of your character. They won't have to fire you. The key is that you will just be getting rid of yourself. What is the benefit of this? In my opinion, it means that there would be a huge possibility that you won't get unemployment unless you can prove that your voluntary termination was, indeed, justified. I have had that happen to me, but I was able to prove, at least on one or two occasions, that I was wrongfully victimized by my employer, and though unemployment payments weren't much, it was something until I could find other employment. And you are right. It is all in who you know. You are either with them or against them but at the end of the day, just know that you did your due diligence. Love who you are and just be the person that you think God wants you to be.
