Pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics are closely related fields that both deal with the interaction between genes and drug response, but they focus on different aspects: Pharmacogenetics: Concentrates on how single gene variations affect an individual’s reaction to drugs. Aims to understand how these genetic differences can influence drug metabolism, efficacy, and toxicity. Helps healthcare providers select the most suitable medication and dosage for a patient, improving treatment outcomes and reducing adverse reactions. Pharmacogenomics: Takes a broader approach by considering all genes in an individual’s genome. Predicts responses to drugs across multiple therapeutic areas, not just based on a single gene. Enables the development of comprehensive treatment plans tailored to the patient’s entire genetic makeup. In essence, pharmacogenetics is a subset of pharmacogenomics, focusing on specific genetic variations and their direct impact on drug response, while pharmacogenomics looks at the bigger picture of how the entire genome can influence drug efficacy and safety. #pharmacogenetics #pharmacy #drugcomposition #genetics #genomics

How do genetic variations impact the actions of medications? Part IV. Pharmacogenes code for drug targets. Drug targets are the molecules or pathways that a drug is intended to interact with in order to exert its effect. A medication’s efficacy or toxicity may be affected by genetic variations in genes coding for drug target molecules or pathways. Examples are VKORC1 and CFTR. The VKORC1 enzyme activates clotting proteins in the blood. Genetic variations that increase or decrease the amount of VKORC1 can affect a patient’s sensitivity to the anticoagulant warfarin. CFTR is the gene that causes cystic fibrosis. However, specific variations of CFTR cause the disease through differing mechanisms. Ivacaftor is a medication used to treat cystic fibrosis in patients with specific CFTR gene variations. Understanding which genetic variations are present is necessary to determine if treatment with ivacaftor will offer benefit. Preemptive pharmacogenetic (PGx) testing, via a simple cheek swab, can determine if genetic variations that affect drug targets are present. These results can be used to guide the selection of medications that are more likely to offer benefit and less likely to cause harm. #pgx #pharmacists #pharmacogenomics #pharmacogenetics #drugtargets

Realising the promise of cell and gene therapies in Asia Pacific #CellandGeneTherapies (CGTs) are transforming not only the way in which we treat genetic and intractable diseases, but also the entire #pharmaceutical ecosystem as we know it. The next generation of CGTs holds tremendous #potential for therapeutic benefits. To realise this promise, however, stakeholders across the value chain – including but not limited to pharmaceutical companies, #healthcare providers, health care payers, and patients – will need to come together to fundamentally recalibrate their commercial delivery modus operandi. Discover how latest developments in CGTs can support hard-to-cure treatments in medical science in #Deloitte's thought leadership on CGTs.

🧬 Understanding Pharmacogenetics vs. Pharmacogenomics: Personalizing Drug Therapy 🌟 Pharmacogenetics: - Study of how genetic differences at a single variation or in a single gene (locus) influence the variability in patients' response to drugs. - Example: CYP2C9 SNPs and response to warfarin. Pharmacogenomics: - Study of how genetic (genome) differences in multiple genes (genome-wide) influence the variability in patients' response to drugs. - Example: Genome-wide Association study on response to clopidogrel. By analyzing genetic variations, pharmacists can personalize treatment plans, reducing adverse reactions and improving outcomes. Embracing these fields is crucial for optimizing patient care and leading the way in personalized medicine. #Pharmacogenetics #Pharmacogenomics #PersonalizedMedicine #PrecisionMedicine #PharmacyPractice #PatientCare #HealthcareInnovation

Our fast and flexible pharmacogenomics service is ideal for gene expression studies and clinical trials. The #CYP2D6 gene encodes the Cytochrome P450 2D6 enzyme, which is vital for the metabolism of around 25% of all prescription drugs. The gene is highly polymorphic, with many alleles resulting in reduced, or completely eliminated, enzyme activity. Poor metabolizers are defined as people having genotypes that result in no enzyme activity, who make up around 5-10% of the global population. These people are at higher risk of adverse reactions from drugs which rely on the CYP2D6 metabolic pathway, so it is important to exclude them from clinical trials which involve these drugs. Our validated CYP2D6 assay covers both tier 1 and tier 2 alleles recommended by the Association of Molecular Pathologists for clinical CYP2D6 testing.
