CENTCOM DIGITAL WARFIGHTING SERIES: EPISODE 1: Digital Counter-UAS, with COL Molly Solsbury ...with our fantastic co-hosts, James Geurts and Lauren Bedula with Building the Base Podcast From early detection ("has something entered my airspace?"), to quick characterization ("is the object that entered my airspace a threat?"), to defeat ("how do I neutralize the threat?"), countering one-way UAS is an incredibly complex challenge. Teams across our Command are always looking for ways to improve our defenses, and Molly and her 513th Military Intelligence Brigade are leading the charge on multiple fronts. In this first episode, Molly talks about: - the unique challenges associated with unmanned system attacks - the importance of seating data scientists next to her operators to identify and implement technical solutions to counter UAS - the necessity for different industry partners to make their systems interoperable, or risk introducing seams and gaps in our defenses Her last point in particular is critically important. No single industry partner can ever provide us the single magic solution to countering UAS: our reality includes diverse geographic environments, threat types, and pre-existing sensors that must be taken into account. We will always require a layered defense, with multiple solutions working together to give us the broadest coverage and defense. We hope you enjoy our first episode of the series - next episode will be released next week, with Col. Garrett Hogan talking about air combat operations. Countering Uncrewed Aerial Systems: A Conversation with General Sean Gainey Center for Strategic & International Studies 15 Nov 2023 The CSIS Missile Defense Project is pleased to roll out our new report, Countering Small Uncrewed Aerial Systems: Air Defense by and for the Joint Force. The study assesses the small drone threat, the defenses available to defeat them, and plans for C-sUAS doctrine, organization, training, materiel, leadership and education, personnel, and facilities. The report’s lead author Shaan Shaikh will begin the event with an overview of the report's findings and recommendations. The conversation will then proceed with a discussion between CSIS’s Dr. Tom Karako, Major General Sean Gainey, Director of the Joint Counter-small Unmanned Aerial Systems (JCO) Office, and Sergeant Major Demetrius Johnson, Senior Enlisted Advisor to the JCO. The discussion will explore ongoing efforts by the JCO to institutionalize the C-sUAS mission across services, reactions to the findings of the CSIS report, and potential paths forward.

Halfway through 2024, finding a resolution to the Ukrainian conflict appears elusive. This conflict's unexpected nature and intensity have presented the world with new realities that demand ingenuity, adaptability, and technological solutions. Reality 1: Allies may lack the production capacity to supply Ukraine with the necessary ammunition to halt the Russian advance. Reality 2: The proliferation of FPV drones saturating the battlefield represents a new tactic that is expected to become commonplace in warfare and must be effectively countered. Reality 3: In the face of heavy jamming in a spectrum-contested battlefield, over-reliance on GNSS for positioning becomes a vulnerability. I invite you to join me as I lead a think tank discussion on how the industry can address these emerging challenges with innovative solutions. Our panel includes Michael (Mike) Rowe, our VP; Vincent Mifsud, ex-CTO of Cobham and Weapons/ C4ISR Systems Expert; and Bob Seddon, Former Principal Ammunition Technical Officer and Inspector of Explosives (British Army) and Director of Azide. I look forward to seeing you there. #defense #unmannedsystems #C4ISR #technology #strategy Robin Joffe Aroop Zutshi Birgitta Cederstrom Avi Kalo (Adv.) Nimisha Iyer Carla Hopson Dorit Alduby - Roffe
