They create a sense of reality that allows the reader to suspend disbelief and enter the world you've created." - Patricia Reilly Giff I learned a lot about the art of storytelling during my journey to winning the 2023 District 101 Toastmasters Humorous speech contest. One of the most important things I learned is that unnecessary details can take away from the point of the story and make it harder to follow. For example, if you're telling a story about a car wreck, you don't need to go into detail about what you ate for breakfast that morning. However, if the information does indeed belong in the story, giving specific details adds credibility and paints a vivid picture in the listener's mind. For instance, instead of saying you got hit by a red car, you can describe it as a raggedy red, 2001 Honda Civic. #storytellingtips #publicspeaking #comedy

Public speaking can be terrifying, but it's also incredibly liberating. When I first started stand up comedy, I was a bundle of nerves. 😬 But with each comedy set, and ultimately each speaking opportunity, I found my confidence growing more and more! 🌱 One of my favourite tricks is to visualise the positive impact I will have on the audience and experience the amazing energetic exchange before it happens. This one presentation mistake can cost cost you a client… Never, ever give your material to someone else and expect them to ‘wing it’. It won’t work. It’ll make them feel bad. And you won’t win the client. If there’s an emergency, it’s always better to reschedule. If there isn’t an emergency, then why are you fobbing this off to someone else? Create the material together and then they’ll understand the message that you want to land. But don’t leave people blindsided. It wont be useful for you, them, or them client.
