#AANP has just released a point of care tool on the topic of Meningitis. There are a number of useful resources including how to navigate and encourage vaccination including a review of the meningococcal vaccines. The tool can be a great resource for clinicians as we discuss meningitis with our patients, parents, and caregivers while also addressing vaccination against this preventable disease [and different serogroups]. Another reminder that having vaccines is not enough...we must also have vaccination! https://lnkd.in/esAMx_7h https://lnkd.in/eW4-GZsi

Considering a #FluVax for your child? >> Here's why you should 👇 A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases estimated that flu vaccination led to a 40-48% reduction in children and adolescents needing emergency department or urgent care visits and hospitalizations due to flu infection during the 2022-2023 season. 🏥 While the flu shot does not guarantee the prevention of the flu, it can help those who are vaccinated from getting severe flu. This is especially important for children younger than 5 years old because they are at higher risk of developing serious flu-related complications. For more information, talk with a healthcare provider. #FightFluWV #WVRuralHealth

Covid highlighted a complex #publichealth phenomena where the UK public percieve publicised vaccine risks as a being much closer to the risks of the disease they are being advised to vaccinate against, than they actually are. To some extent this reflects media coverage where a single case of adverse reaction gets disproportionate attention compared to the many thousands of people protected by a vaccine. There is an ongoing challenge here for #crisiscommunications and #emergencyplanning on how we proportionately communicate risk. The consequences of not addressing this can be seen in the recent measles outbreak, the whooping cough outbreak below and should be key to future pandemic planning. https://lnkd.in/ekKwTiRE

Meningococcal bacteria are transmitted via respiratory and throat secretions during prolonged or close contact. Adolescents exhibit the highest rates of carrying and spreading these bacteria. Prophylaxis and vaccination are two strategies to help prevent this disease. #Stopmeningitis #WorldMeningitisDay

In the U.S. alone, two-thirds of people living with #hepatitisB may be unaware of their infection, increasing their risk of serious health complications including liver cancer. To reduce the spread of this infectious disease, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends universal #hepatitisB vaccination for all adults age 19-59 and adults over 60 with risk factors. Watch the video below to learn why now is the time to prioritize #hepB #immunization for your adult patients. https://lnkd.in/eREfJ3zf

“Measles kills roughly 2 of every 1,000 children infected, according to the CDC. If that seems like a bearable risk, it’s worth pointing out that a far larger portion of children with measles will require hospitalization for pneumonia and other serious complications. For every 10 measles cases, one child with the disease develops an ear infection that can lead to permanent hearing loss. Another strange effect is that the measles virus can destroy a person’s existing immunity, meaning they’ll have a harder time recovering from influenza and other common ailments.” #vaccines #misinformation #disinformation #measles #vaccinepreventableilnesses #health #childrenshealth #vaccineswork #vaccinessavelives
