Please join me on Wednesday, July 17th at 1:00 PM EST – 4:15 PM EST for “Relapse Prevention Mastery: Overcoming Resistance & Denial with Strategic Interventions” Sponsored by E Care Behavioral Health Institute – Sign Up Now - https://bit.ly/3urCCDW Learn Why It’s Crucial To Normalize And De-Pathologize Denial One of the most challenging behavioral health problems is treating Substance Use Disorders (SUD). For many people in the grip of this condition, they are resistant to help and in significant denial about even having a problem. They are often ashamed from telling them “Your Just In Denial” and they get even more defensive because anger is perceived as more powerful than shame. Many people may be forced into treatment by family members, medical professionals, and sometimes the criminal justice system. Others have reached the point where using alcohol and other drugs is causing them more problems than it’s helping them with. Another major problem with people who do get treatment and/or move into recovery is the relapse rate is often extremely high. The emphasis is starting treatment with relapse prevention tools including identifying and managing denial. The next step is developing a strategic plan designed to identify and intervene on a potential relapse episode. This is called a Relapse Intervention Plan (R.I.P.). This plan helps your clients identify appropriate accountability partners in case the client enters a relapse cycle and doesn’t see it. The goal is that someone on their Relapse Intervention Plan may see the warning signs and be able to execute a pre-planned intervention that stops relapse quickly. This workshop is designed to help you identify and manage your clients’ resistance and denial and give you effective intervention tools to move people into quality recovery. You will also be exposed to ways to help your clients develop a strategic relapse prevention plan while completing their treatment process. You will also learn why it needs to be modified on an ongoing basis for maximum effectiveness. Curious about the work I do? Check out my video below describing Family Based Treatment - the leading evidence based treatment for children and adolescents with eating disorders.
Introducing Family Based Treatment (FBT) with Chelsea Tobias, MSSA, LISW-S In our latest video, Chelsea Tobias, an expert in the field of eating disorder therapy, introduces Family Based Treatment (FBT), also known as the “Maudsley Approach”. This evidence-based approach is recognized as the primary treatment for young individuals facing challenges with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED), and Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). FBT stands out by empowering parents with effective strategies and comprehensive guidance to actively participate in their child’s recovery process. Our commitment at Eating and Behavioral Health Associates is to the nuanced understanding that eating disorders manifest in diverse ways, acknowledging the unique needs of each child we support. Leveraging early intervention and rooted in rigorous scientific research, our methods aim to achieve meaningful progress in addressing eating and body image concerns. Discover more about how FBT can make a difference and the suite of specialized services we offer. For further information or to schedule an appointment, please reach out to us at 614-431-1418 or visit our website at https://lnkd.in/d_Twn63Z. #FBT #FamilyBasedTreatment #eatingdisorders #eatingdisordertherapy #eatingdisordersupport #evidencebasedtreatment #columbusohio

Are you a clinician looking for ways to best support people you serve that struggle with substance use and trauma? Check out this training by Illume this month!
Save the date for Illume - Behavioral Health Center of Excellence's "Seeking Safety" Training! Join us for a keynote presentation by Julie Blanco, LCSW, CRAADC on Wednesday, May 22nd, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This training will be an in-person event with limited seating available at 1310 Papin Street, St. Louis. What is Seeking Safety? Individuals seeking behavioral health services often have high rates of both significant lifetime trauma and substance use/misuse. These issues and concerns interact with each other and are best treated in an integrated and present focused manner. It is difficult for a person to recover from trauma while still using substances and it is difficult for a person to recover from a substance use disorder with unaddressed trauma symptoms. Seeking Safety has a present focus approach that allows clinicians to support clients in a way that can safety address both concerns simultaneously. This training helps trainees better understand this process and learn to deliver the intervention in both individual and group formats. Recovered addict | Veteran drug and alcohol counselor | Dedicated to improving drug treatment outcomes through effective family support
"I'll quit the hard stuff, but I can still smoke pot." "I'm not as bad as everybody else here." "I admit it's a problem, but I don't need all this treatment." "I need to focus on my depression." " You can get addicted to pot." The key to any effective drug prevention, intervention, or treatment efforts has got to begin with basic substance use education. Unfortunately, my observation is that this continues to be one of the fundamental problems that contribute to poor treatment outcomes, as evidenced by common power struggles between the client, the family, and the treatment team that are reflected by the above statements. (Let me know in the comments if you've heard any of those before!) When I created the course Understanding Substance Use Disorder, I did it with the specific intention to include material that clears up some the most common areas where denial, misinformation, and misperceptions become barriers to treatment. The course is available for individual use as well for providers to incorporate into their own psycho-educational programming. "Committing to sobriety involves relapses, facing regrets, repairing relationships, sometimes dealing with mental health issues, and staying connected to support. It is hard work, but it also means no more days spent using, not eating and trying to figure out how to get money to live on from scrap metaling, begging for change or selling drugs." This is the story Crystal shared about her life-changing experience at MiraVista Behavioral Health Center's Opioid Treatment Program with hope of educating and helping others.
