The challenging Budget later this month is a reminder that the R&D sector needs a broad base of political champions who see research and innovation as a pathway to a stronger economy and society.
As a sector, we have to earn that support, and CaSE has sought to start early. As soon as the General Election was called, we drew on our public opinion work to create a first-of-its-kind constituency-level map of public appetite for R&D.
This analysis showed the scale of support for more local R&D activity and jobs, more clinical trials in local hospitals and local school visits to R&D centres. It showed just how many people wanted their local MP to be a champion for R&D, and to engage with local R&D organisations.

We used that analysis to contact almost 4,000 Parliamentary Candidates ahead of the election, and shared our new Guide to R&D on the Doorstep which urged them to engage with R&D as part of their campaign platform.

Despite not seeking a response, we got over 130+ emails back from candidates, with many saying they would be weaving more discussion about R&D into their campaigning.
Post-election, we wanted to crystallise on these new connections, so we produced the 650 bespoke booklets described below. It was a mammoth task to produce that many individualised, printed booklets packed with constituency-level stats and nearby case studies of R&D that were contributed by CaSE's members.
As MPs settle back into Westminster after the conference recess, these booklets are already generating new connections and meetings with MPs who might not typically be on the radar of the R&D sector. Its these new voices, from places that might not be immediately seen as R&D hubs, that will help our sector demonstrate its relevance to the whole UK. Its our sector's chance to forge that new group of political champions.
Thanks go to: the CaSE team, our members for contributing case studies at pace, University of Strathclyde for sponsoring the booklets, and Wellcome for supporting the opinion polling.
All CaSE's work depends on our members, so considering joining today: https://lnkd.in/eMQFRYKi
Last month, CaSE sent every Westminster MP a bespoke booklet to:
1️⃣ Share our constituency-level analysis on public appetite for R&D
2️⃣ Invite them to connect with local CaSE members
3️⃣ Encourage them to start a conversation about what R&D means for their constituency and the UK
The booklets shared examples of R&D happening in the MP's own region. These case studies were provided by CaSE members and showcase the fantastic breadth and depth of UK R&D.
Visit our website to: explore a digital copy of the booklet; search and download specific constituency booklets; and explore the full catalogue of R&D case studies.
