I spent the second half of last week at NewCrafts Conferences in Paris 🇫🇷 This is a conference that I've wanted to attend for years, and almost did in 2020 before the pandemic meant that it was cancelled. I'm so pleased that I got to make it this time and had the opportunity to speak. There were a couple of overall themes I took from the conference: 1. We are increasingly aware of the positive and negative impact that software can have on society and in turn, the impact that societal norms and biases can have on software and teams 2. No-one is really sure on what impact GenAI will have on the longer term role of the software developer or development team. Views ranged from 'we'll all be replaced" to "it'll likely have no impact" and the tools and techniques to leverage GenAI are still very immature. We're still figuring it out basically 😀 There were so many good talks and speakers. My particular highlights were: - Diana Montalion talking about how we should question our structures, patterns and mental models, including avoiding relying on super hero engineers, in order to continuously improve our organisations. - Andrew Harmel Law's keynote on the impact of societal power structures on software and how we can ensure there is freedom within teams. - Alberto Brandolini talking about DDD in the Product space - Martin Mazur's take on what impact GenAI will have on software development - Thierry de Pauw with a great history of Conways Law and associated work These are just a few of the excellent talks I saw, and it was great to have such an engaged audience for my presentation, My Team Is High Performing But Everyone Hates Us, which is all about building trust inside and outside high performing teams (slides available https://lnkd.in/e-w-uASn) I'm so pleased that I got to attend at last - massive thanks to the conference organisers Maxime Sanglan-Charlier Rui Carvalho Peter Even and everyone else who helped to make the event great. Learn more about the 2024 EAL Summit

Conferences offering an online option should really continue for many reasons. There are several people who can't make it to in-person events for various reasons. Note that we don't have sit and pass judgements mansplaining the merits of in-person events. Everyone knows those, but to each, their own. I have been attending events online since 2019 (yes, there were some pre-covid events which allowed online participation of speakers in certain circumstances). The two worst online conferences for me so far were LREC-2022 and LREC-2024 which happened a few weeks ago, 2022 being rock bottom. They also turned out to be the most expensive ones for online attendance. They are good quality events with good collection of talks and papers -I don't doubt that. But the online attendance experience is just terrible. And I see these kind of options in the conference feedback form I got today - they have an over-zealous online attendee here :-) At least have the guts to throw in a few negative options there, folks! (e.g., "It was not easy to use" at least, if not "It is terrible", which it was?) #nlproc #conference #conflux #onlineattendance #fridayrant

In the traditional networking scene, you'd invest time and money. Showing up at conferences, joining clubs, attending workshops. Now, the paradigm has shifted: 1. Practice empathy 2. Be genuinely engaging. 3. Reach out with thoughtful messages. 4. Share insights and knowledge. 5. Do it all from home. It's simpler and more accessible than ever. Yet still very underutilized.
