At dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, we believe that accurate measurement is key to driving sustainability in the food sector! Heinz Flatnitzer’s article highlights the critical need for farm-level data to accurately measure and reduce scope 3 emissions in the food sector. Most emissions for food companies, especially in animal protein production, originate at the farm. Relying on secondary data or averages leads to inaccurate insights. He emphasizes that using primary data enables precise emissions tracking, motivating farms to adopt greener practices. Digital tools like Sustell™ help streamline this process, making data collection more efficient and impactful. This article does a great job in summarizing the general interpretation of the “protein transition”. Our three main reasons for transition are: - Reducing the environmental impacts of protein production and consumption - Providing healthy diets for a growing population - Preventing the ethical problem of animal welfare in industrial livestock production systems These are being addressed through changes by: - Shifts in dietary habits from animal proteins to alternative protein sources - Developing alternative proteins for food and feed through research, development, technology and infrastructure - Reconfiguring the whole-food protein through change by consumers, lobbies, retailers and governments https://lnkd.in/dehCQcXb #alternativeprotein #protein #sustainablefood

Protein transition has been a prevailing conservation in food systems in this present times. Here is a simple breakdown of what is about. Protein transition refers to shifting from an animal protein-dominated diet to a plant protein-dominated one. This change is driven by the inefficiencies in current animal protein production, such as its large environmental footprint, poor animal welfare, and health risks linked to excessive processed meat consumption. The conversation mainly applies to developed countries, where animal protein dominates the diet. Over a decade ago, experts recommended reducing animal protein consumption by a third in many Western nations, as intake levels were 150% above the recommended amount for health and sustainability. Coming from Nigeria, this was not a common discussion. Instead, the focus was on increasing animal protein intake to ensure adequate nutrition was the topic. This highlights the importance of context and nuance in global food systems. #proteintransition #sustainability #foodsystemstuesday
