Calling all #education #leadership, #college #coaches and #school #administration while here at the Next Level Speaker Academy in #atlanta , I was reminded about the value of retention in our space and the need to keep our #students and #teachers successful and When asked, why #conflictresolution in this space and how can something so broad have meaning for a #college, #classroom , or #university The answer for The Conflict Chick LLC is this: ✅ Conflict resolution allows students and staff to engage in dialogue that is productive and meaningful that builds confidence and connectivity ✅ Conflict resolution tools from my courses and resources reduce stress and anxiety for all parties ✅ Conflict resolution allows people to be seen, heard, and respected regardless of situational power, competing agendas, a scarcity of resources, and other drivers of conflict. My goal with this journey is to train over 10 million #leaders within my lifetime and grow my impact daily. I want people to normalize #peacebuilding and share this process personally and professionally. Here is a video from my archives with students who are now entrepreneurs and kingdom builders in our #tennessee community: What do you want to build in your city?? https://lnkd.in/edxVP8mB

Was it a fluke that #13 seed Yale Men’s team beat #4 seed Auburn? Or that #14 seed Oakland Men’s team beat #3 seed Kentucky (with 8 National titles)? How about my Lady Trojans headed to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 30 years and will face the Baylor Bears who have 3 national titles under their belt? NO. These are the best teams around the country, and each comes with the “goods” of what it takes to win. So what is the difference? How a team shows leadership, endurance, and teamwork throughout the game is critical. Their preparation, work ethic, dedication, commitment, and longevity are paramount. These are the PQs, Personal Qualities of a team. TRUTH: When applying to college, every student shows up with the same “numbers,” high school GPA, test scores, and a transcript to show the rigor of the courses you chose. These “stats” are YOUR AQs. So what makes you stand out? Well, today is your lucky day! Like Coach Wooden had his Pyramid of Success, well, I have Dr. C’s Hierarchy of Co-curricular Involvement. Co-Founder of GameStop & Laura Mercier Cosmetics • Former President & CEO of Kinko's • Author • Podcast Co-Host • Entrepreneurial Mentor • Passionate about Learning & Teaching
"To a carpenter with a hammer, everything looks like a nail," and in my view, mentoring, storytelling, and teaching are tools every seasoned professional should have in their belt. Having navigated a successful career across various sectors, I firmly believe in the power of paying it forward. Why not level the playing field for the next generation? This commitment has not only shaped my approach but has also led to direct, impactful mentorship initiatives. For instance, post-Kinko’s, I turned my attention to giving back to Texas High in Texarkana, a place pivotal to my early years. Despite the school's lack of a robust college counseling program during my time, I spearheaded efforts to mentor high-potential ninth and tenth graders, hoping to kindle their academic and professional ambitions. This journey, stretching over fifteen years, culminated in 2021 due to several factors, including the challenges posed by the pandemic. However, the legacy of this initiative is profound: a wall in the school now bears the names of seniors and their chosen colleges, scholarship totals have skyrocketed from $3.5 million in 2006 to about $17.5 million in 2021, and the school's culture has evolved to encourage students to reach farther and aim higher. This mentoring journey wasn't just about providing guidance; it was about creating an environment that nurtures ambition and celebrates achievement. I have followed several of “my” kids into their thirties, along with many still in their twenties. My wife, Karleen, and I have been invited to weddings, and I have surprised many at their colleges. It has been very gratifying and scratches my itch to see firsthand how giving back has helped students reach higher and further. And each successful outcome takes me back to that May evening in 1969, when I sat in that chair and engaged with my first mentor, Ross Perot, changing my life. The experience reaffirms my belief: paying it forward is not just an act of generosity; it's an essential practice for those who have forged paths through uncharted territories. It's about passing on the lessons learned, not just to ease the way but to inspire greater heights. #Leadership #Mentorship #Inspiration #Innovation

I just finished two of 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐓𝐚𝐲𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐨's books. He worked in the New York City school system for 30 years and was a New York State Teacher of the Year (1991) and New York City Teacher of the Year (1989, 1990, 1991). "𝑾𝒆𝒂𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑴𝒂𝒔𝒔 𝑰𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏" offers a critical look at the American school system. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: 📚 Stifling Creativity: Gatto argues that our education system stifles creativity and critical thinking, focusing instead on compliance. Shuffling students from one prison cell (classroom) to another and using the bell system can halt creativity mid-stride. 📝 Testing: He argues that while test scores are heavily emphasized in schools, they are rarely relevant in actual job performance or success in life. An example he used is that we don't have our driver's license test scores as a sign on our car to show our driving skills. 🌟 Success Stories: He does share inspiring stories of individuals who found success outside traditional schooling, proving that real-world experiences and self-directed learning can be more valuable. 🔄 Flexible Learning: Gatto calls for a flexible, individualized approach to education that emphasizes critical thinking and hands-on learning over standardized testing and rigid schedules. 🚫 Bartleby Project: His controversial Bartleby Project encourages students to refuse standardized tests as a form of protest, highlighting the need for systemic change. 🎓 True Education: Gatto envisions an education system that helps students find meaning and purpose in life, not just prepare for the workforce. As an educator and a millennial who went through the American school system, I find Gatto's insights both challenging and inspiring. His critique of the current system resonates with my experiences, and his call for a more holistic, student-centered approach aligns with my vision for education. I feel we are doing a better job now of empowering students to think critically, explore their passions, and become independent learners than when I was a student. However, I believe we are still trying to get out of the mentality that success is driven by the class/caste system we create in schools. Let's work together to build an education system that truly nurtures every student's potential. The future depends on it. #EducationReform #Learning #CriticalThinking #JohnTaylorGatto #EducatorInsights

What is success for Academies? Too often success is defined by the the amount of players that come through the system and into the first-team. Media outlets can’t wait to jump on statistics around the number of players released and the tiny percentage that ‘make it’. And having briefly coached in a couple of Academies, it’s easy to become obsessed with getting certain players through to the next age group. Of course, clubs have to priotise the pathway to the first-team and selling them on, as that’s what keeps the lights on. But that should never be what determines a thriving Academy programme. The true measurement of a world class youth development institution should look at where those that exited the system end up. What careers have they moved into? How many have excelled or made it into leadership positions? How many still play football casually? How quickly after leaving football did they bounce back? How many enrolled into education pathways? Do they talk positively about their experience? Children who excel in sports often spend their whole childhood immersed in a structured academy environment, and so there’s a duty of care to both the player and parent to set them up to succeed beyond their sport. We know that only 1% make it, so where are the 99% today? A positive Academy experience doesn’t have to end with 100 first-team appearances, it can offer the foundations for a successful life after football too. The lawyer should be celebrated just as much as the multi-million pound Academy graduate. In my eyes, that’s success. #Academy #YouthDevelopment #Transition #Pathways
