The raw statistics don’t lie. According to the FBI, the United States saw one active shooter incident in the year 2000 but 30 incidents in the year 2017. Related fatalities are going up, too, from 231 in the years 2014 and 2015 to 943 in the years 2016 and 2017. Numbers like these are why gun control has become such a hot-button issue in recent years. https://lnkd.in/eSeD8_Kf

FBI released their 2023 active shooter report. They report one active shooter in the K-12 space—the tragedy at Nashville’s Covington School shooting. To my knowledge there has been one ( Perry, Ia January, 2024) FBI-defined active shooter events in the K-12 space thus far in 2024. These dramatic reductions have occurred because of the great work done in the space on BTA, anonymous reporting systems, physical security improvements, adding school safety directors and culture changes within K-12 and law enforcement. With that said, additional work and continued improvement are needed to eliminate active shooters from the K-12 space. With that said, it is my belief a shift in how we discuss “school safety” needs to occur. The threat matrix facing K-12 is enormous, we need the attention, money, and conversation that worked for reducing active shooters in school to now include reducing the threat of community-based gun violence, increased aggression, overdoses, robberies, intruders, drug dealing, theft, and so much more. Edited: removed no active shooter event in 2024 after being reminded about the tragedy in Perry, Ia.

There’s no denying #socialmedia is a blessing and a curse in today's world. Unfortunately, many have taken it upon themselves to post alarming threats of gun violence at schools nationwide—a problem that’s only getting worse. The Gun Violence Research Center has recorded 13 shooting threats on social media since the start of September…and we’re only 11 days in. Now more than ever, it’s critical that #schools use layered measures to keep their buildings and communities safe because you never know when these threats may turn into action. One thing’s certain: We wouldn’t share these stats unless we had an effective plan to combat the gun violence epidemic. Our firearm detections, human verifications, and immediate notifications have resulted in dozens of arrests and other positive #lawenforcement outcomes. ❗Don’t waste another second…let’s tackle this problem head-on: https://lnkd.in/gSC3zMCX

There ya have it folks... The hook... The key to self-defense is being prepared and knowing how to protect yourself in case of an attack. Remember, while no tactic is foolproof, being aware of different strategies can help in dangerous situations. When faced with a potential assault, consider the following tips: - Use verbal strategies like speaking calmly or reasoning with your assailant to de-escalate the situation. - Engage in non-contact strategies such as claiming you have a sexually transmitted disease or creating a disturbance to attract attention. - If necessary, physically resist by targeting vulnerable areas on the assailant's body or using common objects for defense. Remember, your safety is paramount. Explore options like body alarms for attracting attention or firearms for self-protection, but ensure you are trained and licensed if choosing to carry a gun. Stay safe and be prepared to defend yourself effectively. #SelfDefense #SafetyTips #Preparedness

Much like a smoke alarm, ShotSpotter is a critical tool that helps mitigate harm by detecting gunfire and then alerting first responders with a precise location within 60 seconds. Just as smoke alarms don’t prevent fires—but do play a crucial role in limiting property damage and loss of life by ensuring a swift response— #ShotSpotter plays a similar role as it relates to gun violence. #savelives #publicsafety #criminaljustice Chicago Defender https://lnkd.in/gD-9DcdY

Suicide attempts with firearms aren’t the most common but they are the most lethal. Research shows that most people in suicidal crisis who don't have easy access to a lethal suicide method will not simply find another way to attempt suicide. Removing access to firearms and other lethal means allows time for both the moment of intense suicidal crisis to pass, and for someone to intervene with potentially lifesaving mental health support and resources. You can save a life by ensuring that firearms in your home are stored safely. Hiding is not enough. Safe storage means that guns are stored unloaded, locked, and with ammunition locked separately. No individual besides the person authorized to carry or control the firearm should have access to the key or the combination for the locking device.
