NEWS: Cal Poly Humboldt Breaks Ground on Engineering & Technology Building -- Cal Poly Humboldt broke ground in October of 2024 on the $100 million Engineering & Technology Building in Arcata, Calif. Designed by AC Martin with Research Facilities Design as laboratory design consultant, the 74,000-sf facility will feature multipurpose learning environments equipped with adaptable infrastructure for optimal programmatic flexibility. The three-story development will offer a range of teaching and research labs, collaboration spaces, and gathering areas, as well as an interdisciplinary maker space that opens onto an outdoor fabrication zone. This new home for the School of Engineering will also serve the entire campus community with modern conference rooms, faculty offices, and a student success center. Slated for occupancy in fall of 2026, the net-zero-carbon project will incorporate highly efficient MEP systems, as well as a rooftop photovoltaic array that will be integrated into a planned campus microgrid. Mass timber beams sourced from the Pacific Northwest will frame extensive glazing that puts science on display, while providing a cost savings of $1.3 million as compared to traditional construction. Targeting LEED Gold certification, the highly sustainable facility is being delivered by Swinerton with fs3|Hodges as construction manager. Affordable housing is not a luxury, it’s a basic need. University of Idaho is developing technology to make housing more affordable by using Idaho wood waste to make one of the most sustainable building construction materials on the market. They’re combining sawdust and other wood byproducts with bio-based glue to create a medium for 3D-printing buildings and stackable bricks. “We’re trying to change the way houses are built in the United States,” said Mike Maughan, associate professor in mechanical engineering. “It’s too expensive, it takes too long, and we think we can do it with a lot less money, labor and injuries for construction workers.” The interdisciplinary project, known as PrinTimber, is expected to positively impact Idaho’s fast-growing construction industry. At Oaklands College in Hertfordshire, members of our design team from Carter Design Group and our construction team, briefed a sustainability challenge to over 70 students from Oaklands College. Based on the new Construction Centre on the St Albans campus we have recently handed over, students were asked to imagine a similar building being built, outlining how they would make it as sustainable as possible. Students from T Level courses Building Services Engineering and Design, Surveying and Planning, as well as Level 3 Plumbing, Electrical, and Construction and the Built Environment all took part, presenting back in small teams a week later. All the students did an excellent job, highlighting a range of ideas from air source heat pumps and solar, to use of infra red taps and green roofs; clearly they had all done their research! At NAC, we believe that the spaces between buildings are essential to creating a vibrant campus experience. Amid a significant building campaign, San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) recognized the need to knit all these projects together and enrich the day-to-day student experience. In collaboration with Spurlock Landscape Architects, our Landscape Master Plan for SBVC reimagines 82 acres of campus, transforming it into a more cohesive and connected environment. The plan leverages many wonderful existing spaces for learning and gathering, along with landscapes for enjoyment, while proposing new approaches to create an environmentally sensitive, inclusive, and functional open space network. Sustainability is key — strategies like reducing the heat island effect with shade structures and increased tree canopy, treating stormwater with adjacent plantings, and conserving water with efficient irrigation and native plant material ensure an environmentally sensitive, inclusive campus. This plan not only enhances the student experience but strengthens SBVC’s connection to the San Bernardino community. 🌟 Excited to share our journey in the CreaTech Case Study Competition hosted by L&T Construction 🏗️ 🎉 We're thrilled to announce that our team made it through the first round! 💼 In the second round, we delved deep into sustainable construction practices, focusing on alternative materials to create a greener future. 🌱 Our presentation centered around the development of High-performance Light Transmitting Concrete (HPTLC) as a solution for energy-efficient buildings. Here are some highlights from our proposal: 1️⃣ Innovative Material: HPTLC is a game-changer, harnessing daylight to illuminate interiors and reduce reliance on electrical lighting. 2️⃣ Methodology: Our approach involved two key steps: 1. Sample preparation: We proposed creating HPTLC specimens with varying percentages (3-15%) of PMMA optical fibers. 2.Simulation & Testing: Lightbox and spectrometer testing would identify the optimal sample for maximum light transmission. 3️⃣Energy Savings: Through rigorous testing and analysis, we demonstrated that HPTLC has the potential to significantly reduce electricity consumption in buildings, promoting sustainability without compromising functionality. 🚀 While we're proud of our accomplishments in the competition, we unfortunately didn't advance to the third round. Nonetheless, I want to extend my gratitude to my amazing teammates, Yash Raj and Ashutosh Singh, for their hard work and dedication throughout this journey. 🙌 Together, we pushed the boundaries of innovation and sustainability in construction, and I couldn't be more proud of what we achieved. In collaboration with our esteemed client Goodman, we've embarked on a journey of sustainability and innovation, pioneering the use of recycled materials and adaptive reuse strategies. We are targeting to achieve a prestigious 5-star Green Star Buildings rating and a carbon-neutral footprint. Southend Lane, a testament to our commitment, stands tall as a beacon of adaptive reuse, preserving its original red brickwork and unique Y-frame structural spine. But our journey wasn't without challenges. Navigating the intricacies of this 50-year-old structure within a live environment housing existing tenants required agility and expertise. Yet, with determination and our agile approach, we've transformed a 20,000m2 facility in South Sydney into nine pristine industrial spaces. This project wasn't just about constructing buildings; it's about revitalizing communities. Through intelligent repurposing, we're not only minimising waste but breathing new life into cherished assets. Join us in celebrating this remarkable achievement, marking a significant step towards a more sustainable future. Sustainability has consistently been a key priority in the development of St Edburg's Early Years. The new building has been designed to be net-zero in operation (regulated) and BREEAM Very Good. The design includes elements such as air source heat pumps, electrical car charge points and PV panels to help meet sustainability measures, future proof the building and reduce running costs. The earthworks strategy focuses on optimising material use by considering factors such as elevation changes, local fill material, and existing access levels. This approach ensures a sustainable and efficient construction process. During the early design phase, SOLID’s civil engineers recognised the need to adjust the building’s orientation and positioning to facilitate suitable connections with the existing site access levels while maintaining a practical earthworks design.
