There's an omertà in global re/insurance broking markets. Reinsurance News reports that Aon's Client Treaty (their market facility) is being upsized to be the path for 22.5% of the business that they place. But we also hear that this is being eclipsed by a whopping 35% of business that Marsh Bowring is planning to place into their equivalent market facility in 2024. Fewer broking staff required to place far less premium with fewer underwriters into an already contracting open-market, leads to consolidation amongst re/insurers I would have thought. And nearly 19 years on from Eliot Spitzer's inquiry, how long is it going to take this time for Aon's and Marsh's clients to realise that these facilities aren't just about exerting massive leverage over re/insurers on their behalf, they're a pretty big generator of hidden reinsurance commissions too (allegedly)? This is the omertà! We live in times of great change. How exciting!
