According to FDD’s Long War Journal, which focuses on providing reports and data regarding the global war on terror, Somalia has witnessed the highest rate of suicide bombings since 2006, as Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group Al-Shabaab carried out at least 14 attempted and successful suicide bombings, which led to the death of about 70 people.
Below are some key points from my article:
- Roughly half of the suicide attacks took place in central Somalia, where Al-Shabaab seeks to create new concentration points that would enable it to regain some lost territories, especially after the second phase of the government's military offensive against the movement revolved around pushing Al-Shabaab completely out of cities and villages in central Somalia.
- The bombings targeted mainly areas frequently visited by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, some government officials, Ethiopian forces, and civilians, as the terrorist movement aims to embarrass Somali officials regarding its ability to reach areas completely controlled by Somali forces in central Somalia.
- The second phase of the Somali government's military offensive that started last August led Al-Shabaab to change its strategy, which was clear through resorting to the suicide bombings method, amidst the current decline in the movement’s ability to control areas or impose full influence on some villages, moreover the movement focused on carrying out operations outside the borders of Somalia, especially in Kenya, as well as attempting to penetrate the security situation in Ethiopia.
- Current developments indicate that the Somali government has achieved a significant amount of success with regard to inflicting heavy casualties on Al-Shabaab militants and areas controlled by the movement. However, the forthcoming period is likely to witness Al-Shabaab’s continued adoption of the suicide bombing approach, especially in light of the anticipated increase in the volume of attacks against it after the African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) departure, looks certain to be postponed for three months.
