Some more information on the first of our two UKRI-funded grants! The first project, titled ‘Trust in Forensic Science Evidence in the Criminal Justice System: The Experience of Marginalised Groups’ (£657,922.00) will identify key touchpoints and influences where (dis)trust in forensic science arises amongst marginalised users of the criminal justice system (CJS), developing a tool to mitigate distrust. By exploring user perspectives and experiences with DNA and digital evidence, the project will develop insights into how public understanding is shaped around the preparation, sharing, and presentation of forensic evidence in the end-to-end crime scene to courtroom journey. This novel, interdisciplinary project will examine whether understanding public levels of trust in forensic science can better inform how, when, and why scientific evidence is (and should be) employed within CJS procedures, co-design an empirically informed tool and educational resources. It will also help investigate and improve public trust and understanding of forensic science evidence and the processes associated with its use. The project will be led by Principal Investigator Dr Lara Frumkin at The Open University, in addition to academics at the University of Birmingham (Professor Heather Flowe), De Montfort University (Ms Emma Johnston), University of Dundee (Professor Niamh Nic Daeid), University of Edinburgh (Dr Maria Maclennan), University of the West of England (Dr Emmanuel Nsiah Amoako), and University of York (Dr Vincent Hughes). Forensic Science: The Science behind Proper Justice Delivery. Let me use this opportunity to discuss the science underlying the correct administration of justice with you since today is a significant day for the Forensic Sciences Students Association of Ghana in raising awareness about forensic science. The term "forensic" originates from the Latin word "forensis," which means public, pertaining to the forum or public discussion, argumentative, or belonging to debate. A modern and relevant definition of forensic is that which relates to, is used in, or is suitable for a court of law. Therefore, any scientific discipline used for legal purposes is considered a forensic science. These sciences are employed worldwide to settle civil disputes, enforce criminal laws and government regulations fairly, and safeguard public health. Forensic scientists are involved whenever an objective, scientific analysis is necessary to uncover the truth and pursue justice in a legal proceeding. It is essential to recognize that a forensic scientist is, above all, a scientist. When the knowledge of a scientist is utilized to help lawyers, juries, and judges comprehend the results of scientific tests, they assume the role of a forensic scientist. Forensic sciences play a crucial role within the entire justice and regulatory system. The forensic scientist's expertise lies in using all available information to determine facts. Issues pertaining to law and/or facts that require forensic science expertise can range from questions regarding the validity of a signature on a will to claims of product liability or even investigations into whether a corporation is complying with environmental laws. The work of a forensic scientist helps reduce the number of cases entering an overloaded court system by assisting decision-makers before a case reaches court. These decisions are based on scientific investigations rather than circumstantial evidence or the at times unreliable testimony of witnesses. The American Academy of Forensic Sciences organizes twelve sections representing various areas of interest, activity, education, and expertise. These sections include anthropology, criminalistics, digital and multimedia science, engineering and applied science, general, jurisprudence, forensic nursing science, odontology, pathology/biology, questioned document examination, toxicology, and psychiatry and behavioral science. Every community must embrace forensic science. It offers a trustworthy and methodical method of looking into crimes, making sure the guilty are held accountable and the innocent are kept safe. Forensic science improves the justice system's efficacy and fairness by using evidence-based analysis to establish the truth. It also supports scientific knowledge and innovation, helps identify disaster victims and missing people cases, and strengthens investigative capacities. Adopting forensic science advances security, safety, and the values of justice and truth.

The field of forensic science is undergoing a remarkable transformation, driven by ongoing advancements in forensic technologies. These developments are not only enhancing the capabilities of forensic practitioners but are also fundamentally reshaping the landscape of forensic education worldwide. As highlighted by Daeid in 2013, the rapid pace of technological progress necessitates continuous updates and adaptation of educational programs to prepare students for the complexities of modern forensic investigations. Amidst these challenges, a paradigm shift is taking place in the approach to forensic education, with a growing emphasis on evidence-based education (EBE). This model, underscored by Betts et al. in 2019, prioritizes the utilization of empirical evidence, research findings, and best practices as the cornerstone of teaching and learning processes. The implementation of an Evidence-Based Education System (EBES) in the realm of forensic science heralds a new era of enhanced quality in forensic training and practice. EBES stands as a beacon of progress in forensic science education, promoting a rigorous and analytical approach to learning. It fosters critical thinking skills, evidence evaluation, and the practical application of scientific principles in forensic analysis, as noted by Meilia and colleagues in 2018. By grounding education in the latest empirical research and technological advancements, EBES ensures that future forensic professionals are not only knowledgeable but also adept at navigating the complexities of the field. The transition towards evidence-based education in forensic science is not merely a trend but a necessary evolution to address the dynamic challenges of the field. The integration of evidence-based education in forensic science represents a critical step towards preparing a new generation of forensic professionals who are not only technically proficient but also adept at critical thinking and problem-solving. As the field continues to evolve, the commitment to empirical evidence and continuous learning will be paramount in shaping the future of forensic science education. Institutions worldwide must recognize the importance of EBES and commit to its implementation, thereby ensuring that the forensic scientists of tomorrow are well-equipped to meet the challenges of an ever-changing landscape. 🕵🏻 Research conducted by the University of New Hampshire has developed a more accessible and cost-effective DNA test to identify forensic tactile DNA. Published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences, the study focused on the use of qPCR, a more accessible sequencing method, to determine the sex of DNA. The results revealed significant findings on the transfer of primary, secondary and tertiary DNA. 🕵🏻 In the trials conducted, male and female DNA was observed to be present on the hilt of a weapon in 71% of cases, indicating primary transfer due to direct contact. In addition, male DNA was found in the woman’s hand in 50% of trials, representing secondary transfer, and in the coffee cup in 27% of cases, indicating tertiary transfer. 🕵🏻 Professor Samantha McCrane, co-director of the Forensic Anthropology Identification and Recovery Laboratory (FAIR) at the University of New Hampshire, highlighted the importance of understanding DNA transfer to avoid wrongful accusations in criminal cases. 🕵🏻 In addition, the study examined possible factors that could affect DNA transfer, such as age, ethnicity and skin conditions, concluding that these do not appear to have a significant impact on direct and indirect DNA transfer. 🕵🏻 Researchers point out that the ability to distinguish between different types of DNA transfer is limited, and that more research is needed to fully understand this phenomenon. Good morning! It’s been a minute since I’ve written and I hope this contact finds you well and in good spirits. As 2023 draws to a close, I have some exciting updates to share with you. We all agreed that it was really comforting to know that all around the country, people have experienced the same things we had. I am in the process of partnering with a trusted training team to provide my Forensics Found courses, including the Burnout Protocol, the 10 Day Shift, and Responders Last Call. Stay tuned! Returning to School at 41! In 2007, I finished my Masters in Forensic Anthropology from Texas State University and have been working in different sectors of forensic investigation since. I considered getting my PhD many times but didn’t want to teach and was able to work on human skeletal remains cases without it. I applied to a few programs over the years when the timing was better; I was denied plenty of times and accepted once! While I didn’t need my PhD, I still wanted it. But life was busy, my husband was finishing his doctorate, and we had kids. The closest-in-location program would have required a move. Finally, this year, all of the puzzle pieces fell into place. I learned about the University of Dundee from a forensic anthropologist friend who sent another master’s level graduate to their program. I have a burning research question and aim to answer it with my dissertation - and my advisors are supportive. Most folks go straight from school to school to school and enter the workforce with no prior experience, doctorate in hand. I flipped the script and practiced for almost 15years before recognizing exactly what a PhD would DO FOR ME. I’m not really a rule follower, after all and it’s worked for me this far!! The burden for defence is a heavy one, which is why the forensic field needs more independent forensic scientists in all disciplines to assist lawyers in digesting complex scientific evidence as well as disclosing the limitations to this science.
