I have some bad news, and I have some good news… Anyone who has joined a Fronteer co-creation session knows this phrase well! On Tuesday, Britt Schijvenaars, Gittan K., Matthijs de Munnik, Fenja Günther and I had the pleasure of training over 25 city officials from across Europe in the art of co-creation. As part of the Citizens on the Move program from EIT Urban Mobility, we shared practical tips and techniques to help them better engage with citizens in meaningful, impactful ways. To stay in line with urban mobility and smart city innovation, we hosted the session at the inspiring The Future Mobility Network / Future Mobility Park in Rotterdam. Here, city officials not only explored new forms of mobility but also discussed the future of our cities during a tour with Lucien Linders. 🎓 Are you a city official interested in learning more about co-creation? 🔍 Do you want to test new mobility innovations with potential users? 🌿 Curious about how to truly connect with citizens and drive positive change? 📞 Let’s connect! 🏠 We’ve had an exciting day hosting the launch of Tai ar y Cyd at our Swansea Waterfront campus today, the guide for delivering sustainable and affordable homes across Wales. The collaboration between Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government and Welsh social landlords aims to utilise natural and locally sourced materials for new homes, supporting businesses, new jobs and training opportunities. Gareth Evans, Head of UWTSD’s Construction Wales Innovation Centre (CWIC) said: “Tai ar y Cyd is not just about showcasing ideas—it’s about collaborating with industry, academia, and policymakers to create impactful, long-term change.” For more information on how we’re helping to tackle these challenges view our sustainable courses here 👇 https://lnkd.in/enJnfhze https://lnkd.in/exeB-NUu 📣 You can also follow CWIC Wales for future updates. Fascinating day at Codema - Dublin's Energy Agency Decarbonising Dublin Summit yesterday sharing a panel, chaired by Jeanne Moore, NESC Ireland with Lorraine D'Arcy, Technological University Dublin, Jim Scheer Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), Liam Ryan EirGrid Group, Marion Jammet, Irish Green Building Council on a strategic vision for Dublin 2050. Katlyne Armstrong of Bohemian FC opened with an inspiring insight into how Bohs has made climate action and social equity twin pillars in its strategic community engagement. Bohs mantra that it 'changes lives and communities' brings health, well-being and equity. It connects decarbonisation and net-zero emissions to energy poverty and health, and a community's access to green areas, nature and sports facilities. It is building community resilience by supporting skills and resources that enable a circular economy - like repair, reuse and grow your own. I shared my concept model of 'imagining the climate-just city' and how systems thinking, regional governance and shifting public consultation to co-design and co-creation can enable the level of transformative change need to decarbonise and shape a liveable city for all - from children to elderly. In imagining a climate-just city that respects the needs of people, places and species we don't have to start with fiction. We can look across Europe. Imagine a city where your address does not reveal your socio-economic status and where social housing is for anyone and everyone ?( that's Vienna) or a city where residents get to vote on how part of the municipal budget is spent and can decide on the priority for their neighbourhood - a playground park or a swimming pool for example? (that's Paris) or one where repair shops are subsidised? (that Amsterdam) or where an interconnected tramway linking up the city took just four years to implement? (that's Helsinki). Imagining and envisioning change is often about accepting that business as usual won't get us to net-zero and that progress, if it is to work, requires we involve communities in the design, the purpose and the benefits. If we spend the time on informed public engagement ( not PR) and shift to active involved participation in design and decision-making it may take longer to set up, to build trust and relationships, but it will deliver results that have community ownership. #cities #Dublin #climate #communities

How can the places we live in transition to sustainable, accessible and safe transport solutions? 🌍 Find out here: 📄 https://lnkd.in/eMkxiV8g Ireland's National Sustainable Mobility Forum, organised by the Department of Transport with the support of BABLE Smart Cities in May 2024, explored critical strategies to drive sustainable mobility. Key takeaways included: - Active involvement from local communities is essential. "Get the community involved from the start," emphasised Charles Stanley-Smith from Tipperary PPN. This ensures that transport solutions reflect the needs of the people they serve. - Delays in projects like cycle infrastructure hinder progress. "We need to create space where people can have the right to cycle or walk at their own pace," said Robert Egan from Trinity College Dublin. Speeding up these initiatives is crucial. - Embracing new technologies and flexible funding is key. Minister Eamon Ryan highlighted the successes of the Connecting Ireland rural bus services and BusConnects programs in Dublin and Cork as models for future projects. - Combining transport planning with land use strategies is vital. "Investment in the quality of spaces demonstrates a commitment to the policy and sends a message to citizens that they are valued in their space," noted Jordana Corrigan from Technological University Dublin. - Engaging young people brings fresh perspectives and urgency. The youth session emphasised the need for rapid implementation and greater youth involvement in planning. Want to know all about the event and the main outcomes and highlights?
