Watching American Cole Hocker win the #Olympics 1500 meter race against Jakob Ingebretson and Josh Kerr was thrilling. Hocker covered the moves of those two world-class #runners, kicking home to win. For Ingebretson, it was a disappointing fourth, the worst place an #Olympian can finish. Yet I've long admired many fourth-place #Olympians, two of whom became world-class #writers, Kenny Moore and Don Kardong. Jakob, who recently ran within hundredths of a second close to a decades-old 1500-meter world record, took the race under control and put it all on the line with a fast pace that led to a 3:27 winning time, an Olympic record. I've followed the Norwegian's career since he burst into international fame as a teenager. He's accomplished much, including world titles, since then. Yet as he faded to fourth, I admired his bravery in challenging his rivals. In that respect, he resembled the late Steve Prefontaine in the 1972 Olympics, who finished fourth in the 5000 meters as a young man. Pre died in a car crash in 1975. He believed you had to "respect the race" by giving it all you had. He understood that "leaving it out there" leads to regrets. In the photo shown here I am #running to a sixth-place finish in a high school conference cross-country meet my senior year. I took off at two miles, trying to take the race to my fellow competitors, but I could not hold the pace for the last quarter mile. You can see the pain on my face. I did the best I could that day, with no regrets. My father took this Polaroid photo as I approached the finishing chute. Sure, there was disappointment. We all have these moments in #time when #fear tests our #character, but the beauty of #sport is that even if you fail, you learn something from the #experience. We'll see what Jakob Ingebretson does in the 5000 meters. I predict it will be impressive. #running #run #crosscountry #trackandfield #competition #achievement

I'm currently supporting 7 Edge Rowing Athletes at US Nationals Masters Championships here in Oklahoma. I thought it'd be a good time to share simple piece of advice that everyone should take into racing. That is the importance of progression and treating races the same way as you treat a training session. You're just looking to get better every session and picking one thing from each session that you can do better as the regatta goes on. You're just constantly picking a diagnosis of how the race went, and figuring out one thing you can do better. Then, having one simple, clear, controllable process-focussed aspect that you can focus on for the next race. Then make the objective not to win, or to hit a time, or to medal, rather make the objective of the race just to do that one thing better. If you do that right, then you'll be going faster and the rest will take care of itself. 😊 P.S. European Masters Indoor Championships. - Toruń, Poland 🇵🇱 3 races in one week with 3 huge PBs 3000m Final- 5th with a 12” PB (10:44) 1500m Final - 4th with a 7” PB (5:06) 800m Final - 7th with a 7” PB (2:31) The most amazing experience for my first ever Indoor European championships. The atmosphere in the stadium was unreal, the facilities were world class and to come away with three PBs was pretty epic. Every race had such a different story. I had to front run the 3000m for 11 laps in order to hit my PB and to make the race honest. The 800m was inbetween the 3000m and 1500m which my coach wanted me to do to get some speed in the legs for the 1500m - 800m is not my normal distance so it was hard and the lactic was so intense in the final 200m. No idea how I raced the 1500m after only 1 day of rest but just gave it my all, left absolutely nothing out there and ran to my maximum. I didn’t expect to finish that high up the field as the quality of athletes is fantastic, it really was great to be around such talent. These performances put me top of the UK AG rankings for 1500m and 2nd for 3000m and 800m 🇬🇧 What a way to close the indoor season. As always, powered by plants 🌱 #athletics #veganbusiness
