The Oldest Whisky in the World: A Remarkable Discovery Several bottles of whisky, believed to be the oldest in the world, have recently been unearthed in the historic Blair Castle in Scotland. Dating back to 1833, the same batch was once enjoyed by Queen Victoria herself during her stay at the castle in 1844. The discovery has attracted the attention of collectors, with bids already reaching thousands of pounds for each bottle. The cache of 24 dusty bottles, out of a total of around 40, was found hidden behind a cellar door in the 750-year-old Blair Castle in Perthshire. The ancestral home of the Dukes of Atholl, the castle now plans to exhibit the remaining bottles as part of the Blair Castle visitor experience. Whisky Auctioneer, based in Perth, is hosting the online sale, which is expected to fetch a total of over £240,000. According to a plaque found with the stash, the whisky was distilled in 1833 and matured for eight years before being bottled. This makes it the oldest vintage in existence. The collectable Gordon & MacPhail releases have faced challenges on the secondary market in recent years. Specifically, the Gordon & MacPhail auction price index has decreased by almost 15% over the past three years. In the October 2023 round of auctions, the 100 most historically traded Gordon & MacPhail whiskies lost 6.6% in value.

OFTEN FORGOTTEN BY AUCTIONEERS Auctioneers should not fail to include the facts that matter to the decision-making part of the audience’s brain. At the point of decision-making it is often system 1 (as discovered by Nobel Prize winning Behavioural Scientist Prof Daniel Kahneman) that takes over. The unconscious, automatic part of the brain. System 2, the conscious part of the brain that sales people sadly aim their logical arguments to, is only in charge of 5% of decisions. To move system 1, you need activate decision triggers. Social proof, the principle of authority and principle of consistency are often largely forgotten in auctioneer’s speeches in my observations. - Do mention the genuine opinions of others who have taken similar action that you want your audience to take. - Do know and use the science to convey the expertise and credentials of the auctioneer when it is socially acceptable to do so, or it will backfire. - Do bring to awareness those previous actions take that are logically consistent with the behaviour you want to continue. It’s not very Marie Kondo. But for those of you with an unquenchable thirst for trade marks, there is an interesting bottle for sale in Bonhams on Thursday. I don’t know what counts as the first trade mark. Articles on WIPO's website say there is prehistoric evidence that cattle were branded by their owners, but I am not sure that counts; there the sign appears to have been used to show ownership rather than to denote trade origin. Was it the first time someone signs their name? There’s loads of that on signed pottery; for example, 14 signed works of pottery survive signed by Exekias from the 6th Century BC. And there are others from Egypt and Rome and probably elsewhere. But if a trade mark means something mass-applied to something mass-produced, it might be something like this: https://lnkd.in/eKEvusus This is a Roman-era flask which was made by blowing glass into a reusable mould. On its base is a raised 6-petalled rosette and the inscription 'MARKOS', which might refer to the glass-maker or shop proprietor and looks like a trade mark to me.
